With this statement by Rousseau, he is trying to say that people are more worried about themselves than others. Rousseau credits this for many crimes, wars and murders. Rousseau also said “The first expansions of the human heart were the effects of a novel situation, which united husbands and wives, fathers and children, under one roof” (Rousseau, 252). Rousseau is saying that the first time that humans were not just thinking of themselves is when they had a family. He says that “Each family became a little society” (Rousseau, 252). Rousseau says that when the family were formed each family member had a role and when they were faced with a big task that they could all come together to complete it. Locke is saying that if you have food that goes bad that you have failed your community because it could have gone to someone that needed it. This is a big problem in America today because the rich hold a large amount of money so they can purchase these things and a lot of them are never used. Locke also talks about how a person’s labor is there biggest value. A person’s ability to work is the biggest value that they bring to their community. If the rich were to create more jobs with their money people with less money would be able to work. With the rich creating jobs for the less fortunate it would help close the gap between the rich and the poor.
