“You can do it, I believe in you,” said all of my teammates and coaches. I was once a competitive gymnast, and there was this small, but not so simple thing that held me back from reaching my fullest potential. I had always been able to throw all my skills without being scared, but one day,out of the blue I had a mental block appear. After that I had been so scared to throw a roundoff backhandspring backtuck, even though I had done it a countless amount of times.
Several weeks had gone by, and I would still not throw this skill. At this point, every time it was my turn on the floor to tumble every person on that floor would cheer me on. So I would step up and start running into my roundoff, but after that I would not connect the rest of my

“If I were Shannon Miller this would not happen,” I often thought as I positioned my body onto the bar. I hated heights and even being a few feet in the air on the highest uneven bar unsettled me. It seemed as if I were on the peak of a mountain top and my oxygen supply was thinning out. Each exhale made me dizzier and before you know it, I would be climbing down in a hurry, anxious to see my score even though I knew it would be low. I hated the fear I felt about practicing on the bars and how I believed that I would end up like my older teammate Chanel, who recently had surgery on both of her knees due to an awful fall in the last competition.…

Although others didn 't believe I could get my backhand spring, I was determined because I was the last person on my cheer team who hadn 't already got it, and with the help of my coaches, and believing in myself I finally achieved my goal. I have been an active member in cheerleading since I was in third grade; as I have grown, I have begun to make more in the sport than I ever could have imagined. I believe that anytime someone doesn 't believe in you, it is just a reason to prove them wrong. Not only did I get my backhand spring, but I have also perfected my backhand spring, and recently began trying to get my tuck. It took many tries, although I did get hurt many times while attempting this, I finally did it.…

I know I have trouble with being sure of myself and being confident in what I can do on the field. Although, I am a player that wants to be successful more than anything else in the world I am willing to go through anything and everything you can think of if it will make me a better athlete. When I read Coach Wooden’s book I realized you need poise and confidence in order to reach all the success you want and that really changed me, because I have that motivation and that drive to be successful in every way that I can. Also, poise and confidence weren’t just on the pyramid of success they were at the very top on the second row on this pyramid, so that just goes to show that confidence and poise are two things I really should work on as a person and as an athlete if I want to reach all the potential I know I can. Since I am motivated to be the best I can be, since I have that competitive fire to have all the potential in the world I read this book…

A mental block is where the athlete is afraid of doing a specific skill because of something that happened to them while doing that skill, or something they saw somebody else do on the same skill. Every gymnast goes through these, and they are hard to overcome. Not very many other sports include fear of injury or fall like gymnastics. Just think about how frightening it is to flip two times in a row across a four-inch-wide surface without painfully falling, compared to kicking a ball across a field or swimming across a pool several times.…

One of the most important preparations is an athlete’s confidence. Self-confidence is “belief in one’s powers and a state of assurance exuded by every great athlete, such as Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, Roger Clemens, Wayne Gretzky, Nadia Comaneci, and Serena Williams” (Leith, 2008, p. 18). These great athletes all believe in their skills and abilities, which is considered a good thing in competitive sports. Confidence, many times, is the difference between being a good athlete or the best athlete, the difference between failure and…

I've never been quite the athletic type. For as long i can remember, sports have never been my thing. I was never the fastest competitor on the team, never the one with the lofty goal of achieving an Olympic medal, or compete at the international level. I wasn’t a natural by any means, but I knew how to work hard, and when I put in the effort and I could get results. I was in the upper quarter of finishers and finalists, winning some events, losing others. I was happy, and had fun competing in the sport, reveling my recently discovered realization – as long as I continued to work hard and dedicate myself to the sport, I could do well. I trained and…

The aforementioned training regime was a necessary price to pay if I ever hoped to improve and outperform peers, and I stayed dedicated to it from the beginning. Because of this, I grew accustomed to the ring of the victory bell and the satisfying validation that came from it. However, after many years of relentless training and competition, what has taught me most is not the split-second touch of victory, but the long stretch of perpetual failure. At the age of sixteen my athletic improvement became halted without explanation in a sport in which the sole purpose is to outperform the athlete you had been in the race before.…

My identity can be reduced to one major quality; my level of commitment. My commitment can be seen symbolized on my bookcase. On top of my bookcase rests my academic lettermen patch, my trophies from years past, and above it all I have hung my cross, which, when the sun hits just right, envelopes everything on top of the bookcase in a far-reaching shadow. I have been committed to pursuing a higher education for my entire life, and my commitment to myself and my education is constantly emphasized by my athletic scholar letterman patch on my bookcase.
