The day my man’s trial came around I was very depressed, because I would be losing him today. He would either be married off to a lying pig or he would be killed by a tiger. Over the past weeks I have had been so sad and I had pleaded with my father, to let him go, but he was adamant, that my man had betrayed him. I had been listening to my father's conversations, because I had to know what door the tiger would be at. I myself was in a conundrum because I knew he would ask me for help. Tim O’Brien is a writer that, while impressive, can be described as indulgent with his words; going on for pages at a time on one topic and not sparing a single detail. This, of course, is part of his charm, which is why his vignettes are never lacking in any rhetorical devices. However, in his “The Man I Killed” from his The Things They Carried the rhetorical devices become much less prominent, because the protagonist, Tim O’Brien, retreats into himself. Instead the reader must then shift gears to understand O’Brien’s message—the feeling, shock, obsession, and delusion that comes from killing someone—which he communicates using more subtle and less assertive devices such as tone, hyperbole, and antithesis.…

Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a department and grocery stores and see all types of merchandise for their hair, but not many know what the products are right for them. With my hair being a kinky curl, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and apply them at home. The narrator is not trustworthy as the story is highly subjective. In ‘‘The Tell-Tale Heart,’’ stimulus in objective sense scarcely exists at all. The story contains only two main characters, both unnamed, and three indistinguishable police officers; even the setting of the narration is left unspecified. Only the man’s eye motivates the murderer, and that almost wholly through his internal reaction to it. The action too, though decisive, is quickly over, “In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him.’’…
