On a summer day five years ago, I discovered an envelope tucked away in the corner of the drawer in the kitchen. One glance and I knew exactly what it was, and without wasting any time I defiantly tore open the envelope. Enclosed in the envelope was a family surprise, one that was intended to remain a secret until the baby was born. I, being the tricky twelve-year-old that I was, thought it pretty savvy of myself to have effortlessly stumbled upon such an important document. However, things quickly backfired on me as I unfolded the paper inside, and my eyes met the exact four letter word I did not want to see: “GIRL!” My aspirations for transforming my baby brother into an ice hockey prodigy immediately dissolved. Moreover, I was now going …show more content…
Now imagine the high pitched shrill of an angry infant, two other sisters arguing in the background, a stressed out Mom trying to keep the peace and an overwhelmed terrier endlessly barking at all of the commotion. This was my new life. And I loved it. I found myself fascinated by a life that was so simple, yet one that could cause such distress. Everything Kellan was hard to pin down. My Mom subscribed to multiple companies who seemed to think they have mastered the timetable of childhood development. If our experiences define who we are, then how can we possibly apply a timetable to one’s development? I grappled with that for a long time, and I came to the conclusion that , or perhaps my mother was for listening to them. Assigning a date to a child’s development is unfair, because of the unique circumstance of each. I tried to figure out one specific reason why Kellan acted the way she did,

“Daycare centers are more stimulating and cognitively enriching than the past,” says Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, Ph.D., an investigator for a recent National Institutes of Health that found that at the age four, kids who had been in daycare did better literacy and number-skills tests (Sullivan, n.d., para. 2). However, when there are daycare centers that are not licensed and unprofessional, it makes a difference and affects the children negatively. Parents can be careless and send their little ones to daycare centers without enquiring the details and consequences. Thus, the mistakes of parents take…

Philosophy Statement I have chosen to work in this field because I believe that early school years are the most significant in a child’s life as they lay the foundation for future education. True education is one that brings out the person’s potential. Education should encompass the whole child—intellectual, social, emotional and physical aspects of his/her being. Being a preschool teacher involves a true love for the career and working with children. "…

If you can teach, then you can certainly understand and value the power of knowledge” (2015). Once again, this goes back to the point that first-borns are examples for the other children in their family and are expected to guide their siblings. Since they have already studied the material and taken the class, the eldest child is expected to assist their siblings with schoolwork. It is not that birth order directly determines whether or not we are reckless, responsible, disagreeable, or academically successful. It is how people, primarily parents, treat their children based on their birth order that causes them to develop certain…
