Today is going to be just like any other day, I sketched in my morning journal. The morning Baltimore sun shone past the skyscrapers of downtown, and light protruded through the silk blinds that covered half of the picture window in my room. I rose up from my queen bed. The sheets had become untucked and the comforter lay halfway off the edge. My back rested against the mahogany headboard with my head fitting perfectly between two of the wooden posts. I felt my knotted hair falling out of the loose ponytail I had tied it in the night before. I knew my day-old makeup was smeared all over my face, and I could sense the drool crusting off the sides of my mouth. My appearance was the last thing on the list of things I would have to worry about …show more content…
With my robe tied around my waist and my hair wrapped in a towel, the doorbell rang. Oh, great, I thought. Just great. I tiptoed to the door and squinted through the peep hole. You’ve got to be kidding me. It was Henry, my ex-husband. I had no idea what business he had here, but wasn’t he on point with his timing.

What a bastard, I thought. With one hand clutching the robe to cover my chest, I furiously opened the door following his comment. “What do you want, Henry? I have to get ready to go see my sick mother. I don’t have time for whatever it is you’re here for.”
He purposely took a step back and blinked his eyes a few times. “Well excuse me Kate, I didn’t know I was interrupting something. Is, is there a guy here?” A sarcastic grin grew from the side of his tanned face, exposing a line of perfect, white

Funny that you would bring up me sleeping with someone. Don’t you remember why I left you in the first place?” The grin left his face immediately. “Okay, I’m sorry. But I have something I need to discuss with you before you leave. It’s about your mother.” Henry was my mother’s doctor, ironically enough. Ever since she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he was named the one to look after her. She had gone in for tests a few days ago. He must have the results, but of course he couldn’t just call me.
As if reading my mind, he said, “I would have called you, but I figured you’d want to hear this information straight from me.”
I gave him a puzzled look.
“Since I am her doctor,” he

Jacqueline, or Dr. Black, was one of the multiple people who Pearson met who strongly believed in the importance of standing by their patients through difficult times. By the time Jacqueline’s patient, Gloria was found to have cervical cancer, she had already had her phone number. Pearson writes about how some doctors, like Jacqueline, choose to make doctoring the main focus of their life. While the workdays of many doctors ended as soon as they left the office, Jacqueline spent her time convincing St. Vincent’s House to fund Gloria’s CT scan, driving Gloria to Houston to apply for charity care, and continuously comforting her through their struggle to find a treatment. This way of practicing medicine is seen as wrong by some doctors and even Pearson thinks that some doctors get too involved with their patients.…

On a summer day five years ago, I discovered an envelope tucked away in the corner of the drawer in the kitchen.
