May God have mercy on your soul.” Is a quote made by Fischer who was one of the judges at Garret’s hearing, sentencing him to death for high treason by aiding the enemy through helping them escape. The first example of the character leading sinful lives is when Riley went down to the casino in the hotel that he, Ember and Garret were hiding at for a while in Las Vegas, inorder to make contact with a old friend of his for information on St.George and Talon. It seemed like everyone in the casino were gambling including Riley’s friend, so Riley joined him for a quick round to help get information and to pay his friend for the information. Afterwards he went back up to his hotel room and checked on Ember and Garret who were both perfectly fine and actually listened to him for once. Not only was there gambling, Riley, Ember and Garret all fought with each other throughout the novel. There was a time when Cobalt had confronted Ember about he feelings towards Garret and himself. Claimhing that she was a dragon and that she should not be falling in love with a human, more importantly not falling in love with a former St.George soilder. What he said made Ember upset and they started to argue when Ember claimed that she did not know what she wanted since her human side wanted Garret and her dragon side anted Riley. After Ember stated that she was torn between both RIley and Garret she stormed out of the room declaring the discussion over. All of which ties into the final example which is that fact that Ember was in love with two men at once. He had been in love with both Garret and Riley throughout the first book, Talon, and throughout Rouge. That made her be torn between what her heart and instincts told her to so. Her instincts were telling her to go with Riley while her heart was telling her to go with Garret. Which resulted in Garret feeling that he was a danger to both her and himself and that he should leave, and acknowledging that Ember was going to be with Riley and not

Craig Silvey’s 2009 novel Jasper Jones presents the story of “a foal being born”; that is, it is the coming-of-age story of thirteen-year-old boy Charlie Bucktin. Set in 1965 in the fictional, rural mining town of Corrigan, Western Australia, it tells the story of Charlie’s development of morals and his recognition of the injustices of the world. It explores knowledge and its burdensome characteristics during his loss of innocence, and, additionally, delves into the idea of proving one’s self in the world; learning to stand up both for one’s self, and for what is right. In Jasper Jones, literary techniques, namely metaphors, personification and intertextuality, enable Silvey to illustrate the roles morality, knowledge and proving one’s self…
