Rotunda Speeches

Improved Essays
For 19 years, I have been hard at work, relentlessly training and preparing for the day that I lay it all on the line. When I was young, it was from the shower to my room. In high school, it was the football field during a homecoming pep rally. Now, in college, I can confidently say that all my hard work has paid off and I am prepared to take on my greatest feat of all: streaking the Lawn. As a swimmer, getting there and back as quickly as possible (all while minimally clothed) has always been of the utmost importance to me. At UVA it will be no different, as I have worked tirelessly up to this point and will, without a doubt, be the fastest streaker the school has ever seen. To streak the lawn, you must first undress under the newly renovated bright lights of the Rotunda. This is …show more content…
When streaking the lawn, the only thing going through your head is getting back to the Rotunda, that is your objective, and you will stop at nothing achieve it. At UVA, my metaphorical “Rotunda” will be attending the Commerce School and eventually working as an investment banker on Wall Street. This goal is paramount and nothing will stand in my way. Just like life, streaking requires you to put it all on the line. You have no choice but to give it all you have, because if you don’t you may regret it in the end. In fact, it’s simple economics: if the benefits outweigh the costs, it’s only logical to pursue them. Students at UVA are not afraid of laying it all out on the line, they understand the importance of giving their best effort no matter the challenge they take on. Just like streaking the lawn, sometimes in life, you trip over a metal chain and fall on your face right before you reach the finish line. This might discourage you from trying again, however, if you are afraid of failure you may never succeed. Students at UVA not afraid to try, and are most certainly not afraid to

By reading chapter 6, the main point to stuck out to me were the three main questions to keep in mind referring to the audience. The first is, "who am I speaking to?" Knowing who your audience is important when working on a speech because you can come up with techniques on how to connect the topic to the audience personally, and know what many be offensive or appropriate. The second question is, "what do I want them to know, believe, or do as a result of my speech? "…

President William J. Clinton delivered a speech on November 19th, 1993 called “Remarks to the Convocation of the Church of God and Christ”. In this speech, Clinton addresses the people of the church. The occasion of this speech was to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s anniversary. The purpose of this speech was to persuade America into letting Clinton pass his bill for stricter gun laws, criminal laws, and a greater health care system; he achieves this by stating that we are abusing the freedom that Martin Luther King Jr. fought for, and letting irresponsible minors own and abuse handguns.…

After high school, most students attend college in order to become qualified for a successful future career. In today’s society, attending a top-rated university or Ivy League institution is seen as the ticket for embarking on such a path. Yet because these programs are so competitive, the application process has become unnecessarily devastating, involving extensive test prep, unending academic pressure, exhaustive hours of extracurricular activities that may or may not earn a student an impressive mark of distinction, and emotionally draining interviews, campus visits, and networking events. The message revolving around college admissions is even worse than the agony of the application process itself—a message that a student’s worth and value…

Sometimes it is true that a test score and previous achievements show the potential a person has, but other times it can not. Rosenberg writes, “Colleges like to see students ‘demonstrate interest’ by visiting campus” (3). Visiting campus is one way a school can “determine” whether or not a student is more qualified that others to succeed in the school. They do not realize that students from low income families do not have a way to visit the campuses of top colleges, because they can not afford the trips. If those students could afford the trip, many of them would.…

The United States of America is a noble country home to millions of people fortunate enough to have freedom and opportunities not many countries offer. By lowering acceptance rates and heightening admission requirements, universities can reject all but the most affluent high-achieving students who can maximize prestige. These students—identified as either "achievers" or "underachievers"—fit the “professional pathway” and attend college with the primary goal of obtaining a lucrative, high-status professional job after graduation (Armstrong and Hamilton 2013). Moderately selective universities such as MU are deemed less prestigious, and therefore struggle to compete with more selective universities for these…

“ Tens of thousands of 18-year-olds will graduate this year and be handed meaningless diplomas”(1). According to Sherry, for any job a diploma is useful, but in the other hand a diploma would be “meaningless” if the person don’t show the effort and the basic things they supposed to learn. In the article “ In praise of the F words”, Mary Sherry, explains how some High Schools give diplomas to some people who don’t know anything, or vise versa, how some students don 't get any diploma because they didn’t have the support of someone. Sherry is a teacher who teaches to adults and teens, she is disgusted for the fact that teachers in High Schools are not putting attention to their students.
