We hypothesized that pill bugs would display a positive hydrotaxis and a negative chemotaxis, but our last experiment supports a reaction to chemotaxis. Since we placed them in a tray with all chemical-filled chambers, we weren’t able to tell if they drift towards diluted solutions because they contained more water. The products of the Chi Square Test told us whether the results of our experiments were significant or not. Our results in Part A and B were significant because the calculations proved the null hypothesis wrong and supported our hypothesis; the bugs displayed a positive hydrotaxis and a negative chemotaxis in these two situations. On the other hand, Part C can be invalidated because the bugs did respond when placed between 4 concentrated-chemical solutions.…
The objective of the Isopods Lab was to figure out if the Pillbugs favored the wet environment or a dry environment. After reading the pre-lab report on Pillbugs, my hypothesis was that “If water is added to an Isopods environment, then the isopods will favor the wet environment.” By using two groups of Isopods, one group was put into a dry environment and the other had one drop of water into their dish. After ten minutes of observing the Isopods, the results showed that the Pill Bugs prefer the wet environment more. As time went on, the bugs in the wet environment survived longer than the Isopod in the dry environment.…

As a group we have taken two sterile plastic vials and placed a cup of Drosophila medium powder into each one. After adding a cup of the medium with added half a cup of distillated water into the plastic vial, which allowed the medium to dissolve into it. In our study, we had two controls that we placed the Lumbriculus variegatus into. First, we used spring water to get the normal heart rate of the worms. The other control was a caffeine solution that served as our positive control. Our other solutions that we exposed the worms to consisted of increasing concentrations of two different NSAIDs (ibuprofen and aspirin). For each NSAID, we had a solution equivalent to the recommended dosage for a person based on body weight (the proportional dosage solution), ten times the concentration of this initial solution based on the body weight of the worm, and one-hundred times the concentration of the solution based on the average weight of Lumbriculus variegatus.…
We discovered that the sow bugs had an overall negative reaction towards this environment. We inferred this as we watched and studied the behavior of sow bugs. We knew they had a negative reaction towards the damp environment when they went towards the piece of paper towel and rearing back and going back towards the control or to the dry side. For this lab we conducted a population genetics study on the frequency of wild and apterous flies within a small population of fruit flies. The fruit fly Drosophila works well for genetic and evolutionary geared studies because they have a relatively short generation time but are intricate enough to reveal some biological principles that are parallel to many different kinds of eukaryotic organisms. When exposed to artificial selection in laboratory experiments, fruit flies have experienced dramatic changes behavioral and evolutionary traits within ten generations or less (Goldsmith, 1991). It is important to note that wild flies have wings and apterous flies do not. The purpose of artificial selection is for humans to modify species over generations by intentionally breeding two organisms with the objective of acquiring a specific trait.…
