Rote Learning: Helpful or Harmful to a Students Education Lori McWilliam Pickert, an author of a book on methods for teaching children, once stated, “To learn how to do, we need something real to focus on — not a task assigned by someone else, but something we want to create, something we want to understand. Not an empty exercise but a meaningful, self-chosen undertaking.” Provided that the student truly wants to learn and understand, the quote emphasizes a whole new process of learning that may be introduced into the education system if it hasn’t already. Connecting to another profound author, Francine Prose, who made a statement that, “Education after all is a process intended to produce a product”(174), Lori McWilliam Pickert seems to understand this idea and has taken the initiative to help others understand as well. In this case, the product that shall be found will be a student who can use the skills learned and incorporate them into ‘real world’ problems using both logic and intellect. Many schools have gone into the habit of only introducing methods of test taking, leading students to fall accustomed to memorizing facts, rather than truly learning the subject. Valedictorian from Coxsackie-Athens High School talks about this issue in her commencement speech, describing herself during high school as a ‘good test-taker’ but realizes that she now has no idea what she wants to do with her life.
