Upon arriving at The Temple B’nai Jeshurun I was not exactly sure what to expect or what I had got myself into. I had assumed that my class would be looked at weird and treated funny because we were spectating their Jewish worship. However, after arriving in the sanctuary the people were very friendly and welcoming. Some even came up to us and shook our hands and told us they were glad to have us there. Sally Frank was very helpful and mentioned someone of the holidays we had learned about in class including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover, and Sabbath. The sanctuary was absolutely breathtaking, the stain glass windows were dark blue on the outer portion and a light blue in the interior portion with lots of colors to make the windows glisten when the sun shines through them. While the pews had separate seating for everyone so they do not sit too close. Overall, the temple was absolutely breathtaking with its …show more content…
“The seventh is a Sabbath to the Lord your God” (Exodus 20:10). Ohe day of the Sabbath the temple is not allowed to recite asking prayers because that day is supposed to be the day of rest for everyone. Sally Frank spoke to us about Rosh Hashanah, which is known as the Jewish New Year. Rosh Hashanah marks the creation of the world and is the beginning of The Days of Awe. Yom Kippur was also mentioned during the service. Yom Kippur is the tenth day of the seventh month which is the start of The High Holy Days. These two holidays focus on repentance and usually correlate with longer services. Passover commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from the Egyptian Pharaoh, which was lead by Moses. Moses then lead the Israelites across the Red Sea and as Egyptian soldiers tried to bring back the Israelites, God stopped the parting of The Red Sea and drowned the Egyptian soldiers. The first two days of Passover are celebrated with family and no one is allowed to drive or go to

As the holidays draw near, the feelings of warmth and security an individual gets when surrounded by those closest to them are noticeably fainter than they have been in previous years. It seems that as time goes on, the familial aspect of the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, has been watered down in order to make it more marketable to consumers. Also, the day itself is now practically ignored in order to make room for more profitable traditions such as Black Friday. Capitalism, commercialism, and retail together have managed to not only completely change the meaning and story behind centuries old tradition, but are now beginning to eradicate it completely, because they have replaced the important values with their own. The more time and energy…

Succulent and juicy turkey, cold fresh country ham, velvety creamed corn, fluffy buttery mashed potatoes, creamy yams, flakey biscuits, and rich green bean casserole. Gathering around my grandparent's large dining room table with family and close friends of the family will always fill me with warmth.…

After my visit to the Jewish temple I still see some general things in common, but the two religious faiths and how their services are run are extremely different. As the Jewish temple service came to an end, I realized how many things I have learned about the Jewish faith through this community assignment. By taking the time to research and then learn from a live experience, I was able to gather a lot of information on such a large group of people within our society. I believe it is important to learn about other people's beliefs, values, and lifestyles other than our own to be able to understand how our world works as a whole. Overall, my attendance to the Jewish temple service was a great learning…

My favorite Thanksgiving dinner, and my favorite dining experience overall, happened 2 years ago at my Aunts house. It is the dynamic relationship between the rituals, shared by most practicing Jews, alike alongside the mystical influences, in relation to the myths accompanying the Sabbath, that have led Heschel to formulate a unique perspective as to why the seventh day should be treated as a sanctuary in time by all Jews alike. Heschel is most concerned with the concepts of time and space in regards to the Sabbath as well as the midrashim that label the Sabbath as a precursor to the days of messiah. Noting how while nearly everything in the world deals with space and the accumulation of things of that nature, the Sabbath’s focus is rather on time. Heschel expands on this idea claiming that while other creation stories hold a significance on the site of creation, in Judaism, rather than emphasizing site, there is an overarching importance placed on time. He expands on this idea by further connecting how the concepts of space, time, and God are related by going so far as to say that “time is God’s gift to the world of space” (Heschel, p. 100).…

Senior Year My greatest memory so far in my eighteen years of being on this earth is without a doubt my senior year of high school. It was absolutely unforgettable. My senior year as a whole (which was just last year) was the most fun I’ve ever had in my life and the happiest I have ever been. When I was a chubby little freshman with glasses I thought to myself that high school would be one of the longest time periods of my life and that four years would feel like forty years. But man was I wrong, high school went by in the blink of an eye.…
