Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead Analysis

In Act II of the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, there is a discussion of what happens during death. Rosencrantz is one of the characters in this play. Rosencrantz is quite stupid and doesn’t have too many bright ideas. Tom Stoppard’s control over the rhetoric, syntax, and diction used in the play develop Rosencrantz’s own beliefs about death as well as how stupid he really is. Rosencrantz is a dull character. He can not comprehend complex issues such as death. In this passage, he makes an attempt to sound intelligent and complex, but is unsuccessful. This is seen through the Rhetoric used in his monologue. Antithesis’ like “you’d wake up dead” reveal that Rosencrantz views death as something that a person would be aware of. Something temporary that one could simply wake up from. The oxymoron’s use in a different phrase, “I mean one thinks of it like being alive in a box, one keeps forgetting to take into account the fact that one is dead.” It is ridiculous to think that one has the ability to be self aware during death. As far as science knows, a dead body is is only considered dead because of it’s absence of life. Therefore, Rosencrantz’s entire analysis of death …show more content…
At the end of his monologue, Rosencrantz starts banging on the floor with his fists. He tells the imaginary person who is alive in the box “hey you, whatsyername! Come out of there!” Guildenstern, who has shown signs of uncomfort, tells Rosencrantz “you don’t have to flog it to death!” The final statement by Guildenstern has a double meaning. The first meaning could be to stop banging on the floor so much. The second meaning could be to stop droning on as he understands Rosencrantz’s point. Either way, Rosencrantz got carried away by his own ideas which ironically ended up killing his original statement “it’s silly to be depressed by it” by ending the with “I wouldn’t think about it if I were you. Shakespeare, the author of the play Hamlet, uses metaphors and imagery to develop the character Hamlet as a depressed and unstable man. In his soliloquy, he talks about how death is nothing more than an endless dream in a form of a metaphor: “To die, to sleep, - No more - and by a sleep, to say we end the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to-...” (5 - 8). Hamlet compares death to sleep as if it’s a normal thing to happen, which is technically true. But, if anyone believes in something like that, it’s often a sure sign that the person is depressed, and, as like Hamlet, they are accepting to the concept of death taking them.…

This clueless remark serves as a relief for the seriousness of what Hamlet is actually saying. However, these incidences are only funny when one looks at them from the surface, because if one were to make a deeper analysis of the play, they would see the much darker role that they play. The proof of this comes most strongly at the end of the play, when the death of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is announced after the rest of the deaths have occurred (Ham. 5. 2.…

The death of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern becomes inevitable when Hamlet realizes that they are working for Claudius. Hamlet expresses his opinion of the two when he declares, “Ay, Sir, that soaks up the King’s countenance, his rewards, his authorities. But such officers do the King best service in the end. He keeps them like [an ape] an apple in the corner of his jaw, first mouthed, to be last swallowed. When he needs what you have gleaned, it is but squeezing you, and, sponge, you shall be dry again,” (Shakespeare 4.2. 15-21).…

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are like Claudius’ servants. They may be friends with Hamlet, but their services are for the benefit of Claudius. For example, when Hamlet asks Rosencrantz and Guildenstern for their purpose of visiting Hamlet, Guildenstern reluctantly admits that the King instructed them to spy on Hamlet. In addition, when Hamlet kills Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern do not appear to care about Hamlet’s mental state after committing a murder; they are at the scene because they are following orders from Claudius. Furthermore, even if Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are not aware of Claudius’s plans and simply think that Hamlet is going England to treat his mental illness, they did not show concern for Hamlet’s wellbeing when they continue their journey without Hamlet.…

Polonius: Polonius is consistently presented as comic relief here. This can be seen most easily in one of his first miniature “speeches” in the scene, when despite acknowledging that “brevity is the soul of wit,” he takes ten lines merely to inform Claudius and Gertrude of what they know already - that their son is mad. This is an amusing episode for the audience, as by admitting that wit is denoted by brevity and then failing to demonstrate any ability to be brief, Polonius effectively calls himself witless and the audience laughs at his ignorance of his own inferior intelligence. It is plain that this is evident as much to the other characters as to the audience, as Gertrude makes clear with her gently mocking entreaty “more matter with less…
