Rosen Concert Reports

At the concert that I attended, a small orchestra called the Watauga Community Band performed in the Rosen Concert Hall on campus. The concert hall was relatively small, and the lights were left on for the audience. This made the atmosphere feel more informal and welcoming. The band was introduced by a master of ceremonies, and then one of the clarinet players stood up and introduced the first piece. The clarinet player would provide background information before each piece. This was helpful to me because it helped familiarize me with pieces and works I didn’t have prior knowledge on.
The first piece the band performed was called Strike Up the Band, composed by George Gershwin. It had a fast tempo, and in some parts this made it sound like a march. The dynamics of this piece used contrast to draw my attention to certain instrument sections or melodies. Before an

It was the theme song of the musical/opera of the same name. It had a fast tempo during the refrain melody, and the tempo during the verses slowed down. The dynamics of this piece were loud during the refrain, and soft during the verses. About halfway through the piece, all the instruments stopped, and woman’s scream sounded over the concert hall loudspeakers. Immediately after this, the loud refrain started up again. This made me jump and sent a chill or two down my spine. The texture of this piece was homophonic, and the mood was dark, mysterious, and foreboding. I really liked this piece, because I immediately recognized the melody.
The fifth piece was called The Lord Bless You and Keep You, composed by John Rutter. This piece had a slow tempo, and it balanced all sections of the orchestra very well in regards to dynamics. The piece’s texture could best be categorized as polyphonic. This made the piece’s mood very reverent, but cheerfully so due to the melodies that were used. I liked this piece because it also balanced each section of the orchestra

There was much power and than a sweet section within the piece as if a chase was occurring for timbre. This was ultimately my favorite piece. The live performance of Haydn’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 76, No. 3 “Emperor” Allegro was more enjoyable than the recording.…

    1. The first piece of music I listened to for this assignment was Lohengrin, prelude to Act III composed by Wagner. The song was written for a scene for a wedding between a hero and heroine. The instruments in this song include a full orchestra and it is an orchestral piece. In my opinion, the song had a variety of feelings and sounds.…

The piece had many sharp stops and well- emphasized notes. I was watching the performers closely and noticed that one music page went on for what seems to be forever because the entire piece was 30 minutes and there were only a few pages. This piece made me feel like i'm in the future because all of the different types of music in one piece. This piece took me into a completely different world with it’s beautiful…

The second Musician I want to talk about would be Michael Lington during the live Jazz Concert. Michael Lington is the Sax player. He is a Danish- American contemporary Saxophonist , producer, songwriter, recording artist and a purveyor of soul and contemporary Jazz. I personally love the way how the concert went, even though I’m not in the actual performance, but I still felt how excited the audiences was during the concert. During the Concert the music was played very soft and it did not have anything like the big band or African influence kind of characteristics.…

This piece has “characteristics of classic sonata form, and is similar in energy and length to such concert overtures as Shostakovich’s Festival Overture.” As with a typical sonata form, the piece is broken down into five main sections. The first introductory section features the opening horn fanfare and a full ensemble crescendo into the exposition. Starting at measure four, the first theme is articulated with tutti figures thru many different instruments. Immediately following that in measure twelve, we hear the inversion of that melody in the clarinets and alto saxophone. The inversion is then repeated in the upper woodwinds and in the cornet.…

My experience, while I was at the concert, was very interesting since this was the very first PUC concert I have attended. This concert followed all the same principles as a normal concert, besides the fact that it was not formal. Talking about the pieces, Johnathan Cook’s first piece was Etude-tableaux OP 39, No. 5 in E flat minor by Sergei Rachmaninoff and encompassing the change in tone of the song very well. Since this song is in E flat minor, the tone, I took from the song, was lightly somber, while in some instances, were cheerful. There were parts of the song that made me feel as if I was heading somewhere in a dramatic fashion.…

The first time period was the baroque era, the pieces was piano and medium forte and moderato. The string players were popular and they were the ones in the front of the stage, which these instruments were very popular around this time. I also noticed that they were all in black suit attire. The next era was Classical and the first song was medium forte and allegro, but the second piece was forte and vivace. This is when the orchestra played over the choir, and it was okay.…

The style period of this composer was the Baroque period. I disliked this composition since I did not feel that the flow of music was very good. The music was unstable since the pattern of the harmony would constantly change (Talking About Music). Moreover, I found this composition was too dense, since there were many things going on simultaneously, such as the timber would often change from different tone…

The variety in this piece is that the soloist are going back and forth between their parts as if they are having a conversation or are saying something that they are all in agreement. The style of this piece is very uplifting as if to say “we are all in this together.” A point of unity is in the instruments and chorus, during this piece they were both strictly just the background sound. In many other piece, they have had their own parts and to describe it “responsibilities of their own” but they were just the behind the scenes in this piece, only to make the soloists sound the best they could. Whenever the soloist’s dynamic changed, the instruments would do the same to complement.…

On Sunday, October 30th, I attended a live performance by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jacek Kaspszyk as a part of their 2016 U.S. tour. When I walked into the concert hall, there was an electric atmosphere as a crowd of people was waiting in anticipation to find their seats and settle down to enjoy the show. In order to have a better idea of what I was about to experience, I read the playbill that explained how the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra is the premiere musical institution of Poland. After I had a sense of the importance of the music I was about to hear, I took the time to look at the setup of the stage. All of the chairs were angled into a semicircle formation, centered around the conductor 's stand.…

January 19th at precisely two in the afternoon, I found myself sitting in Dunham Hall room 1109, better known as the Choral Room. Within that one room radiated a warm, lively, and vibrant atmosphere. One room filled with a handful of friendly faces all shouting out their joy and encouragement to their friends and bandmates. It was in room 1109 that I experienced the smooth rhythmic sounds that gave me a new appreciation for Jazz. Let us begin with the piece I disliked the most out of the five that were performed.…
