Traore started off by appropriately quoting Johnson & Johnson (1996) who opined that because we are living in a multilingual setting a mixture of different languages (written or spoken) conflicts are sometimes inevitable. Many times, in our homes and schools we tend to try to solve our differences by implementing conflict resolution strategies to resolve the issues we are experiencing. However according to Johnson & Johnson (1996) we should encourage educators and all other stakeholders to be sensitized to the other cultures so as to minimize the differences. Here in Antigua and Barbuda its often referred to as the “melting Pot” of the Caribbean the different cultures that exist here includes people from China, Syria, Guyana, Jamaica, Dominica, America, St. Kitts, St, Vincent, Nigeria among others. These tend to outshine the natives that are here. The born Antiguans tend to have a lot of preconceived thoughts about the other cultures and so once you are from a particular country you are expected to behave a certain way and that causes conflicts between the groups. In Jamaica, we can find conflicts arising from a cultural perspective as well as within communities. PALS, Jamaica was founded in 1994, originally PALS stood for Peace and Love in Schools. However, in March 2014, the organization was renamed PALS…Peace and Love in Society. PALS aims to influence positive changes in behavior through teaching alternative dispute resolution techniques (PALS Jamaica 1994).

The purpose of this film was to reintroduce the two groups to each other. After viewing each group left with a better understanding of each other, with the basis being to identify what they have in common with each other and working

In their article they present some fixes for, the educational system that will cure the conflict between white people and people of different race and ethnic backgrounds. One fix that they present “involves looking at some common beliefs about teaching and learning that often undermine students’ opportunities to learn but which we sustain because they seem sensible and are, in many cases, well-meaning” (Hawley and Nieto 2). Another fix for the educational environment is to use the experiences of those who are from a different ethnic background as a learning resource. Hawley and Nieto elaborate on this fix further by stating that “all students bring cultural values and experiences to their education, yet schools frequently disregard them” (Hawley and Nieto 4). If these fixes work, then there will be less conflict and more friendly relations between white people and people of different race and ethnic…

In school, the Negro isn't taught the business side of things when it comes to a job or career. This factor prevents the Negro from employing one another and in turn they are left to wait and hope that a white businessman will hire them. The problem with this factor is that whites at this time only called for the Negro when all the workers of their own race had been taken care of. The author feels that the negro easily throws away good opportunities by not turning something that they are good at into a thriving business because they may feel that they have a college education and that they are to good for it. The author uses the example of a white professor who resigned his position to run a laundry mat for Negroes and became rich from the idea.…

Over the course of the years that African American Studies has been a separate functioning entity, there have been different ideological and political reasons for why African American studies are needed in institutions of higher education. Scholars such as Nathan Hare, John Henrik Clark, John W. Blassingame and Devere E. Pentony have given their own varied rationales as to why they believe African American Studies is a necessity within these institutions; if it is even one at all. Each of these men have different opinions on this topic but they do share one similar perspective.
