In “The Giver”, by Lois Lowry, The Giver tells Jonas about when he was training a girl named Rosemary to be the Receiver. In a Memory Moment, as The Giver tells the story of Rosemary to Jonas, he recalls the sadness of the training, and the way it had affected Rosemary. For example, The Giver says, “But everything changed, once she knew about pain. I could see it in her eyes.” The way Rosemary was affected by her training, portrays a mood of sadness, or sorrow. The Giver also reveals that he felt love for Rosemary, and that he was deeply saddened when she had applied for Release. The Giver’s love for Rosemary portrays a mood of love as well.
