Rosedale Reading Project
It always seems impossible until it's done - NELSON MANDELA It was a regular day. I got my lunch and went to the classroom. Everyone was talking about the latest gossip. The room was wild, but then everyone simmered down as Mrs.Shirt walked in the classroom. “Rosedale, Mississippi has recently sent us pictures of their library and town”, she started.
As we looked at all of the pictures I realized that they weren’t as fortunate as us. They had leaking roofs in the library and they didn’t have a lot of books. They were in poverty. The schools didn’t have the resources to teach the students. In the town there was only a place to hangout called Freedom Fellows that kids could go to after school and get homework help or just hangout. It broke my heart to look at the photos. We wanted to help so we started to brainstorm ideas. One kid blurted out “I want a book drive.” another said, “We should have a fundraiser.” We ended up settling on a fundraiser and whichever grade raised the most money got to watch Mr.Hay shave his beard. That got everyone riled up and the games began. We decided that each time a kid brought in a book they got a raffle ticket which would be put into a basket. Each week the number of books and money kept getting higher and higher until we met our goal. The money got a lot of attention and was very close between grades, but 6th grade ended up winning,

We all had massive smiles on our face that stretched from ear to ear. I was so joyful that we could make an

impact on a community's life. We ended up raising a little over $1,000 and we got 3,300 books. Later that month we got to meet some of the Freedom Fellows and give them their check.
