Rosalia De Castro’s poems offered several interesting comparisons within her poems. De Castro’s poems, “[I well know there is nothing]” and “[The ailing woman felt her forces ebb]”, created a new perspective and interpretation of the its meaning in its entirety. In “[I well know there is nothing]”, the lines, “Well because we are so, clocks that repeat forever the same”, contain the source domain “we”, and the target domain refers to the “clocks” (De Castro 6-7). In this poem, De Castro uses the word “we” to indicate the people of the universe of all ages and the “clocks” incorporate the entailments of time repeating itself, continuous movement, monotony, and time in general. Humans are like clocks everything in life has happened before at one point in time, which is similar to how history and time repeats itself. The poem states, “I well know there is nothing new under the sky, /that what I think of now other have though before.” (De Castro 1-2). This statement reveals the fact that life continuously cycles and those that have come before us will experience the same things as those in the present and future. Although I only reviewed two poems, I the other poems created by De Castro resemble the same concept regarding cyclic behaviors. This is effective in signifying repetition and the importance of time. The poems, “[The ailing woman felt her forces ebb]” and, “I well know there is nothing]” have melancholy tones, but they do bring forth an interesting point. After reading and interpreting De Castro’s poems, it seems as though the message she is trying to convey is the importance of time. The common saying that ‘life is too short’ relates to her poems because I feel as though the tone of her poems urge the reader to take advantage of time and enjoy what you have before time runs
