Heroism Defined My brother once said,“Heroism isn’t really a definition, but more of a moral character achieved by surrendering the natural state of man in order to become the best version of oneself.” Heroes are never perfect; man cannot be perfect, but heroes are the closest there is to perfection. A hero is someone who shows selflessness, does not succumb to quit trying after falling once, and is willing to stand for what is right.
A hero demonstrates selflessness by readily giving up their personal needs and wants, alternatively basing their actions on others’. For example, in Yerevan, 1976, Shavarsh Karapertyan, a record-breaking swimming champion, showed selflessness when he “dove down 33 ft and started rescuing people” (“brainjet.com”) after witnessing a bus crashing into the water. Rosa Parks displayed this extremely well when she refused “to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus” (“biography.com”) because she felt that segregation was morally wrong. Although the beliefs of the world cast her into prison, Rosa Parks still held her own firm belief that people are equal, and her actions eventually led into rebellions against segregation. Likewise, Frederick Douglass, a free African American slave, also stood up for the importance of equality. To Douglass, slavery was an awful idea, but talking against this as a former slave was rather risky as it might end up resulting in him being sold back into slavery. Despite this, Frederick Douglass stood up for what was right and spoke his thoughts regarding slavery. “From that time until now, I have been engaged in pleading the cause of my brethren” (“SB,72”).
