Today, racism is one of the most commonplace issues amongst western societies. It is the force which keeps humanity behind and the obstruction that prevents humanity from moving forward. Based on recent events, discrimination is more severe now than during the peak of the civil rights movement. While being prejudicial can strengthen the identity of a group, the pursuance of lessening the impact racism has on the prosperity of the people is becoming increasingly essential. Stereotyping, the vast support of collectivism over individualism, and fruitless socialization lead to the division of races, accordingly the investigation of bigotry and racism is imperative.

For generations, humans have generalized complex ideas in an attempt to make them easier to conceive. Common stereotypes include: white people having a lack of rhythm, Muslims being terrorists, and blacks being naturally good at sports. Most of these ideas arose from the media’s depiction of various groups of people. It is an undisputable fact that people are increasingly susceptible to being influenced by the media when taking the rapid evolution of technology into account. The most striking consequence of these practices has been on adolescents who are especially impressionable. The overexposure of media outlets that erroneously portray particular ethnic, racial, and gender groups lead them to accept these perceptions to be true. Thus, leading to the inability to cultivate a progressive self-image leaving teens feeling lost and out of place in the world where acceptance is key to living a productive life. Furthermore, a recent objective that has been heavily broadcasted by the media is cultural appropriation. Popular culture has a bad habit of glorifying white people for adopting aspects of black culture, but shaming black people for embracing their heritage. Limiting the exposure of a child to people of their particular race for an extended duration of its life could result in confusion and fear. The lack of exposure could potentially be a ruinous factor that drives a person to adopt the beliefs of an exemplary racist. The importance of socializing children with people of various backgrounds precisely ties into the imperativeness of educating children on the diverse makeup of the country in which they live. The gravity of these lessons is made evident through the multitude of heavily publicized racist acts. Also, interaction with people of different background builds one’s tolerance and ability to accept differences; thus, ensuring one’s ability to work effectively well with others to solve conflicts.
