When I think about slogan “roots before branches” I think of it as a term that is representative of a tree. Trees have been noted to symbolize strength, beauty, and wisdom. These are all aspects that the African American culture provided for the written and untold history of America.

Africans were uprooted from their homes and planted in foreign territory. They had to spread their roots and develop their leaves to truly understand who they are and their purpose in unfamiliar lands, regardless of the oppression they were experiencing. This was the only way that Africans were able to survive and integrate themselves into countries who were already established. Hence why Blacks living in America are called African Americans, or blacks living in Brazil are called Afro-Brazilians and so
