Roommate Behavior

Roommates - You either love them, or you hate them. Regardless of your feelings towards them, if you have a roommate, you must learn how to live with them. From household chores to buying groceries, to paying the bills on time, roommates must find a common ground if they are to live with one another in peace. The more people you live with, the more difficult it is to maintain control. When even just one roommate fails to help the other roommates, it can create a sense of hospitality and resentment. For example, if a roommate continuously avoids all cleaning responsibilities, the other roommates will get angry with that person and usually use negative reinforcement to attempt to change their behavior. If at least one roommate can exercise …show more content…
Often, roommates must be directly asked or sternly instructed to clean. When using the word "clean," it refers to sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, etc. Using all six sources of influence, a roommate that does not clean could become an avid cleaner. To test this theory, Lauren, the roommate that prefers cleanliness and organization, will attempt to influence Meghan, the roommate that lives in a state of uncleanness and disorganization. Both roommates are currently in college and live in a four-person apartment with Ashley and Christina. Ashley and Christina are not as bothered by Meghan 's inability to clean as Lauren. Ashley and Christina occasionally clean the apartment and do get annoyed when everyone is helping except for Meghan. Over the course of a month, Lauren will capitalize the six sources of influence to change Meghan 's behavior. If successful, Meghan will be intrinsically motivated to clean the apartment at least once a …show more content…
Meghan is not motivated to clean the apartment. Thus, Lauren must enable Meghan to find pleasure in cleaning the apartment. After all, people can find pleasure from almost any activity, whether it is originally pleasurable or not (Grenny, Patterson, Maxfield, McMillan, & Switzler, 2013, p. 80). The book, the Influencer: The New Science of Leading Change, suggests that people should be given the option to say "no." Thus, Lauren should always ask Meghan to clean the apartment but understand that Meghan could say "no." However, knowing Meghan 's behavior, Meghan is not one to say "no" very often. Therefore, Lauren should capitalize on her saying "yes" and sincerely thank her for helping. While helping, Lauren should share influential stories such as cleaning as a child or mention how great it felts to live in a clean apartment. Additionally, Lauren could create a game out of cleaning by seeing who finishes their chore first, or who does a better job cleaning up a certain mess. In the end, Meghan should start to begin to love what she originally would

Courage is essential in the nursing profession; but not as essential as caring. Caring is known to be the central aspect of nursing by many professionals (Petrou et al., 2017). “Care is the essence of nursing and the central, dominant, and unifying feature of nursing” according to Leininger in the article by Dahlke and Stahlke (2017). However, care can be shown in many different forms. Larson and Ferketich describe caring not only as a physical treatment, but also encompassing empathy and feeling of safety with your nurse (Petrou et al., 2017).…

The story “Mess” by John Hollander is interesting take on the concept on cleanliness and how the human mind perceives it. Hollander starts out his essay by giving an example of how different people react to a mess. He refers to the subjects as X and Y. He states that what may seem messy to X, could be perfectly neat and orderly to Y. Hollander even goes as far to say that if Y had a pile a books, and X arranged all the books into a neat stack, the neat stack could appear to be utter chaos to Y. After this profound example, the article continues to go on and list all the different kind of messes that exist in our lives. Hollander breaks the messes into different categories such as outdoor messes, indoor messes, personal states, and personal appearance messes.…

In the essay “The Dog Ate My Disk, an Other Tales of Woe” Professor Carolyn Foster Segal explains that even after lengthy syllabus warnings and a humorous cartoon of a cat explaining to its teacher that a dog ate its homework, students still came up with multiple excuses for being tardy, absent or turning in assigned work late. She categorized the excuses into these five categories, the family, the best friend, the evils in dorm life, the evils in technology, and the totally bizarre. For family, Segal points out that “The death of the grandfather/grandmother is, of course, the grandmother of all excuses” (565). Students will use that excuse all the time because the teacher will probably show pity for them in their sorrow. Demonstrating…
