From Room 93 to Badlands, much had changed in artist Halsey’s career. For over nine months in 2014, the singer only had one single called “Ghost,” a song about loving someone who was toxic to you. In early October, she released a five track EP called Room 93, which told the experiences of a few youth that affected their day-to-day lives. It only took a year, from sleeping at her manager’s parents’ house to having her own apartment in L.A., for her to be inspired to make this album. On August 28, 2015, we arrived at what came to be known as the Badlands. Born Ashley Frangipane in Washington, New Jersey, the now twenty-one year old had much to say when it came to this album. In a Z100 interview with Shelley Rome, Frangipane described the Badlands as a “dystopian, post-apocalyptic society with a booming metropolis and a corrupt government. A desert wasteland surrounded the city, preventing people from going in or getting out.” It was a metaphor for a mental state, a way for the artist to cope with the reality of her life. Those songs are called “Control” and “Gasoline.” Months before this album was released, Halsey did a small headliner tour called the American You(th) Tour. In this tour, she performed songs that had never been heard before, and one of these songs were “Control.” The first time I saw Ashley was March 25, 2015 and it was also the first time I had ever heard this song. She explained it as a song that taught you that nobody can ever decide who you are for you. You are in the front seat, and you should never let anyone take advantage of you. “I'm bigger than my body, I’m colder than this home, I’m meaner than my demons, I’m bigger than these bones,” are the lyrics in the chorus. Coupled with a passionate performer and heavy music, the song can make anyone who connects with it
