If you roof is beginning to look a bit old and weathered, you are probably interested in replacing it. Unfortunately, that's an expensive task that most people cannot afford to do on a whim. If the majority of your roof is in good condition, you can always opt to replace the worn shingles. While this is usually a job best left to the professionals, it is possible to take a DIY approach.

Here are four helpful tips for removing shingles:

1. Protect and Prepare Yourself
Removing roof shingles can be dangerous, so it is important to protect yourself before you begin. Ideally, you should at least wear heavy-duty gloves and a protective eye mask. Additionally, make sure you wear strong shoes with rubber soles so you do not slip and slide on the roof. You might also want to consider wearing long sleeves or sunscreen to prevent sunburn. In addition to protecting your body, you should also make sure your space is safe. Always use a ladder and have a friend nearby to help you up

2. Put Down a Tarp
Another helpful tip for removing roofing shingles is to lay down a tarp. The tarp will hep catch debris so that you do not have a lot of cleanup to do after you are done. Lay the tarp on the ground so that you can toss shingles down as you remove them. If you don't want to toss them, consider using a few tarps to create a slide for the shingles.
3. Remove The Shingles
Once you are protected and prepared, you should begin carefully removing the shingles. There are usually a lot of nails on the shingles to help keep them in place, so bring a hammer or roofing shovel with you.
