Ronnie Walter Cunningham (Walter Cunningham) was NASA's second or third civilian astronaut (different sources said different things) after Neil Armstrong. Meaning that he did not serve in the military. Some astronauts serve in the air force or navy controlling large vehicles making them good candidates for astronauts once they retire from service. Walter Piloted in the Apollo VII which flew for seven days. After in 2008 he was awarded the NASA distinguished service medal for his contribution on Apollo VII. Walter Cunningham also wrote a book about his days as an astronaut called All American Boys. Although I did not have time to read the entire book I listened to little parts of an audiobook version and from what I heard, it is very good. He
