Ronald Regan's Speech Analysis

Decent Essays
The speech of Ronald Regan was given in the country of Germany in Berlin to address the Berlin wall which separated East and West Berlin and prevented many people from moving between the two. I belieave that because of Ronald Regan's speech he was able to tear down the wall that separated the two sides of the city, but he also was able to change many lifes beacause of it. This speech was able to change the way that people saw that the wall should not be left standing because it was causing dread and despair amoung the people of Germany it also was seen as a prevention of freedom and that the people on both sides of the wall were simmilar to captives in a prison. This speech also gave courage to those not only fighting for the opening of the

The calamitous setback helped many people mourn as a nation, although it may have been tough for the families, Ronald Reagan wanted the nation to come closer as one. One of the rhetorical devices that Reagan uses is that he builds trust that they will get through it together as a nation (ethos). Reagan also uses the appeal of emotion by using the connection between his family and those families that were affected. Ronald Reagan’s, A Time for Choosing Speech, main points are as follows: did we still retain the knowledge of the definition of freedom according to our Founding Fathers? “It’s time we asked ourselves if we still know the freedoms intended for us by the Founding Fathers” (Reagan 1). Did we still define government on those founding beliefs? A people that could be self-governed or would we continue to redefine our definition of government until it was completely transformed into totalitarianism. President John F. Kennedy's Speech As the United States was emerging from recession, President John F. Kennedy held a news conference to articulate the involvement of steel corporations and their effect on stable prices and wages. As stated by Kennedy, citizens of America were told they have a right to expect “a higher sense of business responsibility” (103-105) for their country. To enhance his ideas for America’s steel prices, Kennedy uses a variety of rhetorical strategies including: repetition and formal diction, an allusion towards his earlier speech, and using forlorn facts to ridicule steel corporations. In order to articulate his need for stable prices and wages, Kennedy uses repetition and statistics to convey a logical viewpoint for the reader, while using formal diction and long syntax to establish credibility.…

In her eulogy honoring former president Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher used various rhetorical strategies, including an appeal to Ethos and parallelism, to convey what an influential figure Reagan was as both a president and a man, following his retirement. Through her intricate use of these rhetorical strategies, Thatcher expresses that Reagan was a great president for the United States and an excellent diplomat for the international community. Thatcher begins with a concise and abrupt introduction to the speech; this establishes the fact that the former president has passed on and presents a reflective tone which reveals her vast knowledge of Reagan. The parallelism present in “Lost a great president, a great American, and a great man” shows Thatcher’s respect for President Reagan by describing him as an overall “great” person. As Thatcher concludes her introduction, she states, “I have lost a dear friend”; this establish her credibility on the subject of Ronald Reagan as she has closely interacted with him.…

I’m not quite understanding of your comment. Are you saying that former Presidents Reagan and Clinton were as vocal against George Dukakis and George W. Bush as Obama is now being against Donald Trump and that there was justification in ’88 and ’00? I am fairly clear on the aforementioned campaigns and Ronald Reagan stayed out of the ’88 election much to the dismay of George Bush. And Bill Clinton, much to his credit, didn’t get involved with disparaging remarks about George W. Bush. What I object to is for a sitting President to be as negatively verbal as Obama and staff.…

Inspiring others, although sometimes a difficult task, can be a lifetime goal for many people. It requires the ability to persuade and emotionally connect to one’s audience in order to inspire them. Ralph Waldo Emerson defines success as “to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived” (qtd. in Earhart). Waldo believes that success can be found by making someone else’s life better, so we decided to accomplish this by discussing the topic of bullying. Our goal was to inspire several groups of eighth graders to stand up to this issue of bullying.…

Bush’s speech comforted the devastated nation by telling us acts of heroism and by telling us that we were going to get the men who did it. He wanted to comfort the nation because we were all affected by the tragedy of September 11th. He knew that we were confused about who did this and why anyone would ever do this. He comforted us by saying that the world was with us, supporting us and that we would never forget our nation’s national anthem playing at places such as Buckingham Palace, the streets of Paris and Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate. Knowing that the world’s prayers and support was with us reminded us that the entire world felt for us in the face of this tragedy.…

One device that Reagan uses is the appeal to emotions, such as humor, pride and sympathy. Reagan uses appeal to emotion because he wants to establish an easygoing demeanor with his audience, show that he is sympathetic to their plight, instill pride and push them towards his ideals. He wants it to be known that his intention is not to attack the Soviets but to invite them to join with the West and to work towards a more prosperous future. Some examples of this are when he tries to instill an easygoing demeanor through appealing to their emotions, more specifically to the audience’s humor. Reagan states, “But my friends, there were a few things the Soviets didn’t count on: Berliner Herz, Berliner Humor, ja und Berliner Schnauze”.…

While Reagan’s speech was effective, the demolition of the Berlin Wall didn’t commence for roughly two years. Only on November 9th in 1989 did East Germany began the deconstruction of the wall and allow citizens free passage to West Germany. Ronald Reagan’s non-stop push for freedom was responsible for these events, and helped end the USSR’s oppressive rule of other nations. This in turn led to the USSR’s eventual demise, ushering in a new era of strong and independent…
