Together they had two children. There daughter Patricia was born in 1952, and their son Ronald Jr. was born in 1958 (“Ronald Reagan Biography 2”). Now with four kids Nancy and Regan still left very little room for their children. They had a very close emotional bond which at times led them to almost ignored their children (Schaller 8). Later on three of the four wrote books about how their parents were cold and distant. In some ways it was hard for Reagan to be a good father since his was an alcoholic. Although he was distant from his kids he truly loved Nancy. All throughout their marriage he wrote her love letters. Any extra time he had he would put towards Nancy, even when he was president he would sneak off with her and take private getaways (Cohen 45). Democrats were pleased to run against him because they saw him as inexperienced and had no chance of winning (Cannon 101). They underestimated his connection with the people and his ability to win many over. He opposed high taxes, government regulations, big spending, waste, and fraud. He used dramatic anecdotes to get his points across and since he was an actor and tv star it was easy for him to memorize speeches and speak well on screen (Brands 150). This effectively help his campaign very much. The democrat Reagan was running against was the former governor of California Edmund G. Brown. He push for higher education, more aid to public schools, and huge freeway construction (Brands 151). His projects raised taxes which many didn't like so when Reagan came around many were happy because he wanted to cut taxes (Brands 152). Most voters saw Reagan as a “ pleasant man aroused by a range of grievances they shared” (Schaller 20). Reagan swept Brown to win the election and on January 2, 1967 he is sworn in as the 33rd governor of
