The expanded role of the government has brought many significant changes to the United States economic system. Old-Style, individual-enterprise capitalism had given way to what the professor from duke, Calvin Hoover, said in his book, The economy, and liberty and the state, as “ Welfare capitalism, progressive capitalism, or simply the organizational economy.” The federal government , in ways small and big, pervades our lives. President Ronald Wilson Reagan was a transformational president. Ronald Reagan galvanized the American public with his famous speeches that helped redefine how American politics went in the 1980s. Reagan dealt with many government issues during his time in office. For example, in 1983, reagan announced the Strategic Defense Initiative, a plan to develop space-based weapons to protect America from attacks by the Soviet union. During his second term, president Ronald Reagan forged a diplomatic relationship with Mikhail Gorbachev, who became the leader of the soviet union in 1985. In 1987, the Americans and the Soviets agreed to sign a historic agreement to get rid of intermediate-range nuclear missiles. And later that year, reagan spoke out at Germany's Berlin wall, a symbol of communism, and decided to challenge Gorbachev to tear the wall down. Two and a half years later, he allowed the people of Berlin to take down the wall. Reagan's economic legacy was very mixed. On one side, tax reduction and a tightening of interest rates by the federal reserve followed a record period of economic growth.
