Ronald Cotton
It started in July 1984, when a attacker broke into Jennifer Thompson-Cannino's apartment and sexually assaulted her while she was held at knife point. Jennifer stated that when it was happening she just wanted to memorize his face so that if she lived through the horrible crime she would be able to identify him. Later on, Jennifer chose Ronald Cotton, a black restaurant dish washer, out of a photo lineup as the assailant. And chose Cotton in a live line up a second time. She was more than sure that it was him.
Ronald was convicted in January 1985 by the jury for the crime. Evidence presented in the case included similarities of a flashlight found at the crime scene and a flashlight found in Cottons home. Similarities of the rubber of Cottons shoes to the rubber left at the the scene. And the eyewitness testimony.

The other pieces of evidence would not have been enough to convict Ronald Cotton of the crime. Faulty procedure of the photo line up and live line up lead to Cottons arrest. During both line ups Jennifer did not know that her attacker could have been missing completely to the lineup. The false assumption that her attacker was definitely in the lead up lead her to feel that she had to pick someone. Another faulty procedure was during the photo line up, after Jennifer chose Cotton she asked the officer that helped her if she did good to which the officer told her she did great. Giving her more than enough of a confidence boost to believe it was

A huge piece of evidence that the prosecution tried to ignore was the garage bag that George Anthony and the man at the towing company. They have no idea how long the that garage bag was in the car. Once the police department collect that bag and place into an air tight room everything dried out. At that point there was no way to tell if the smell in Casey Anthony’s trunk was from the garage or the rotting body of Caylee Anthony. Not to add that the tow driver never admitted to smelling anything wrong with the car.…

Actually, the evidence found did point to James Earl Ray as the perpetrator of the crime and no other evidence other than claims of a conspiracy were found at the scene. However, there were some weaknesses in the prosecution’s case, the two witnesses at the rooming house could not identify the man they saw running from the bathroom after the shot. Nor could they match the gun to the mangled bullet that killed Doctor Martin Luther King (Polk, 2008). A confession of this crime helped the prosecutors put James Earl Ray behind bars and kept him there until his death. Nevertheless, I believe a good prosecutor could win this case.…

I don't think the officers had any other suspects, even before the lineup. All of the men who stood in the lineup were stand-ins other than Cotton. It's a story we hear often; officers focusing so much on one individual that their investigation comes short of considering the true suspect. If Poole would have been included in the photo or in-person lineup, it's hard to say how the Cotton case would have played out. One problem was that Cotton had also been accused of similar crimes.…

On a July night in 1984, the homes of two women were broken into and both women were sexually assaulted. During a photo array one of the victims identified the attacker as Ronald Cotton and later confidently confirmed this suspicion during a physical line-up. These identifications mixed with other evidence resulted in the arrest of Ronald Cotton in August later that year. Cotton was later found guilty of both accounts of rape and received a life sentence plus fifty-four years in prison. Elizabeth Thompson, the female victim who identified Cotton as the attacker, provided a compelling and confident testimony during the trial and definitely impacted the juror’s decision in ruling Cotton as guilty.…

At seven years old, little minds still developing, bodies still growing. We understand very little of the real world, there are no worries, no responsibilities. There is very little choice, at this age, feeling relieved that we can choose our own movie before bedtime. Browsing through the movie selection we know the different types of movies, Family, Comedy, Disney and Horror. We skip over anything that looks even a little scary; because you’re still traumatised from the time you snuck behind the couch and saw a scene from Jeepers Creepers, and begged your parents to tuck you in that night.…

    Eyewitness Testimony Essay

Before DNA evidence an eyewitness testimony was a pivotal turning point in a case and often the only evidence offered to identify a suspect. The most common method of identification of an eyewitness’s account is a line up. These come in different forms from: verbal, pictures, to actual people present in a room. The idea behind these varied forms of identification allows less bias if someone had only had one sense to identify a suspect. For example: someone who was blindfolded could use a verbal line up but visually would not have seen anything.…

There was a substantial amount of physical evidence found in this particular case. The physical evidence included a 1977 white corvette, blood smears found in the Corvette, hair and clothing from a victim also found in the corvette, carpet fibers, plastic bags found around the victims heads, and sperm. The white corvette was one of the most important parts in the physical evidence due to the fact that, a prostitute had told police that she had seen the Yates’ youngest victim, Jennifer Joseph, in the white corvette nine days before she was found. Jennifer Joseph was a 16 year old prostitute. Authorities ultimately collected a record of all Corvette possessors and another of all Corvettes stopped by police.…

This also created bias judgement from the judge, David Burnett, who continuously denied innocence of suspects, although strong supporting evidence was present. One of the evidence found was a piece of hair on one of the boy’s shoe lances. With use of advanced DNA technology, the hair was tested and a connection was made with one of the stepfathers, Terry Hobbs. Hobbs told the cops that he had not seen any of the boys that day, but a witness from his neighbourhood contradicted his statement. Due to the bias judgement of the police officers during the investigation, no one took time to question Hobbs’ neighbours to support his statement, but inevitably took his word for it.…
