Romulus and Remus were famous historical figures from Alba Longa, in the Latin-owned part of Italy. They were sons of Mars (or in some versions Hercules) and Rhea Silvia, a Vesta Virgin. The ruler of Alba Longa, King Amulius, kicked them out of the city by having a servant dump them in the river. Later they grew up to found the city of Rome. Their legend began in 771 BCE when Romulus and Remus were born. King Amulius, as mentioned before, imprisoned Rhea Silvia because she was no longer a Virgin and sent the children to die by natural causes, because he reasoned that the the gods couldn’t punish his city. After founding Rome, Romulus put in a system of government that included senators and patricians, rather than exclusive rule by a king, even though he was still a monarch. Rome’s original population was made up of runaway slaves, criminals, and castoffs. Due to the fact that most of these people were men, Rome couldn't grow its population. As a result, the men stole women from nearby cities. This, predictably, caused a war, with Rome emerging the victor over the Sabines and Latins. A truce formed between the Romans and Sabines when Tatius, the Sabine king, and Romulus agree to form a joint reign. It was a time of peace in Rome for five years but the harmony was broken because of King Tatius, who was caught committing treason. The Senate decided that Tatius must go to Lavinium because he wronged them, but he was murdered in Lavinium and Romulus became the sole king of Rome. For 20 years, Romulus expanded Rome’s land through war and conquest. Even though he did a lot to benefit the Romans over his long reign, Romulus became more autocratic and the Senate was becoming angry. Romulus has several different death stories depending on the source of the myth. He could have died and risen to heaven to become a god, died at the hands of the Senate, disappeared at age 53 or died at age 55. Just like how his appearance is unknown, no one knows for sure how he
