The PTSD was caused by the horrific things that Dallaire witnessed. Dallaire had tried to bleed to death while drinking a bottle of scotch. He took out his father’s 50 year old sharp razor and began to cut himself all over. Another attempt was driving up to 150 km/h on a Quebec road with his children in the car. He was constantly shouting at his family for no reason and he was uncontrollably screaming and thrashing at night, so he was soon in the spare bedroom. Dallaire was so traumatized that he would even drive to unsafe areas with armed teenagers and try to get them to attack him. Dallaire felt as though he was living in hell. The PTSD and suicidal attempts and thoughts took over him everyday. In an interview he states: “I might have cut just once, but the warmth of the blood and the smell of the blood, because there’s a sort of an iron smell, had an incredibly soothing effect. So I thought [I’d] see how much more of that would help, knowing that, sooner or later, if nobody came, I would bleed to death. But I wasn’t looking immediately to bleed to death so much as wanting to feel that release.” Luckily Dallaire’s sister in-law, Christine arrives just in time. Dallaire’s PTSD was misdiagnosed and was only diagnosed when it was too late. Sadly his PTSD is permanent, but he has found many ways to deal with
