In Romeo and Juliet, many themes appear throughout the whole story. They develop through the words of the characters. Many of these themes are important and still exist today. The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet provides many outstanding themes, which changed over time; they still continue to be present in modern day sources to show how The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet has influenced the modern world. Depression is a quality of Romeo that is still present today: “The teenage propensity for risk taking and poor decisions making can turn depression into a dangerous game” (Wagner 2). Before Romeo decided to meet Juliet, he was depressed and that led him to dangerous thoughts; Romeo often felt bad about himself and feels like there is no hope. Depressed teenagers can have perilous thoughts that can only lead to bad consequences; the theme is depression can become risky, and this is seen in the play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. However, peer Pressure is existent in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and also in current times: “ We are all influenced by peer pressure … because we all want to feel like we belong to a group of friends. Our friends help us feel like we ‘belong’ and provide… emotional support” (Peer Pressure 1). Romeo was peer pressured into acting against his will and this led to many undesired problems; some of the problems are the death of Tybalt and Mercutio.The theme is peer pressure is normal, but people should not succumb to it.
