Romeo And Juliet's Attitude Towards Marriage

Throughout Romeo and Juliet, Juliet’s attitude toward marriage changes dramatically because she starts out as practical person, then begins to be serious about love, and finally turns into a total romantic. In Act 1, Scene 3, when Juliet and Lady Capulet talk about marriage, Juliet replied, “It is an honor that I dream not of,” implying that she has not begun to think about marriage, nor does she care about it. Later that evening at the Capulet, she meets Romeo and starts to fall for him, but she is still cautious because she claims that her relationship with Romeo is “too rash, too unadvised, too sudden.” She later finds out that she is about to be married to Paris and she asks the Friar, “Do thou but call my resolution wise,” implying that

We can apply STANDPOINT THEORY to this interaction between Noah and Allie. Allie finds herself in love with two very different people. Noah, who was her first love, and was the one that her family didn’t approve of because they felt that he was “trash” and not “suitable” for her. Lon, who is her current love and fiancé, and happens to be very wealthy and the type of man that her family finds suitable for her. Allie is in love with both men but doesn’t know what she is going to do or how she will pick between the man with the social status that she knows her family approves of and wants for her or picking the man that her family has already decided wasn’t good enough for her.…

Weddings in the twenty-first century are quite different than what would have taken place in the time of Romeo and Juliet. Marriage has changed tremendously since Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet; arranged marriage has vanished, marriage customs have changed, and how much goes into preparing a wedding. In the fifteenth century most marriages were arranged by parents or relatives not by marriage. The purpose of arranged marriage was to transfer land and ownership or peace treaty between two families or groups.…

Romeo and Juliet is a classic tale of true love, even though the two main characters end up dead, and one of the main causes of their suicides is one of their parents. Set hundreds of years ago in the city of Verona, Italy, two upper-class families, the Montagues and the Capulets, have been caught in a feud for quite some time. At a party hosted by Capulet, Montague’s son Romeo and Capulet’s daughter Juliet fall madly in love. The two teens, along with Friar Lawrence and Juliet’s nurse, arrange a secret marriage, but after the wedding, Romeo is banished from Verona and Capulet orders Juliet to marry another man, Paris. Romeo and Juliet end up killing themselves in order to be with each other.…

Juliet is the only child and daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet, we know this because Lord Capulet refers to her as ‘the hopeful lady of my earth’. Juliet, just like Romeo makes the transition from someone as pure as an angel to responsible adult during the play. She starts as quiet, obedient and innocent. Personally I think that Juliet portrays the stereotypical image of a goody two shoes however she possesses an inner strength that enables her to have maturity beyond her years. When her mother suggests that she marry Paris because Paris is rich and good looking, Juliet responds: “I'll look to like, if looking liking move.”…

Shortly after meeting Juliet, he decides that he is in love with her and needs to marry her right away. Romeo explains, “I’ll tell thee as we pass; but this I pray, that thou consent to marry us today” (II, iii, 63-64). The act of claiming that he needs to marry Juliet immediately shows how little he thought about making this huge commitment. Marrying a woman who you have only known for one night is completely illogical and in his case will risk causing tensions to rise between their two families. He never asked himself if marrying Juliet was worth all the turmoil it would cause.…

In Conclusion, I think that Romeo is a young, inexperienced and impatient but loyal and brave boy. I think that his naivety plays a huge rule in this because love was taken as an extravagant feeling to have when it was not truly happy as the lovers can experience heartbreak and many other obstacles. It seems as if Romeo only more cautious and deliberate, his devastating ending could have been prevented (even though we have not finished the book yet). Amongst friends especially Mercutio, Romeo shows signs of his social and quick witted persona, even with his fond of verbal jousting that is mainly about sex. Lastly, Romeo is like every other male in the world who only unveils their true self to the people who they trust or who understand them.…

The Montauges and Capulets are enemies. Lastly, when the nurse goes to Romeo for the date and time of the wedding she warns Romeo “…if ye should lead her in a fool’s paradise, as they say, it were a very gross kind…
