Romeo And Juliet: Were They Truly In Love?

Decent Essays
But the question lies with, were they truly in love ? As we suspected in the story, they fall in love when they laid eye on each other. I believe that it is not love, it is called attraction or lust. Romeo and Juliet falls in the branch of philosophy aesthetics which means it relates to the perception of ones senses. Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy which deals with the principle of beauty and artistic taste. As Romeo act when he saw Juliet for the first time, all he saw is a young, attractive or maybe sexy beautiful lady. Romeo only opens his eyes to see Juliet’s beauty but did not open his heart to see her personality. As a man, I can’t blame Romeo to be a victim of man’s lust. Everyone can be a victim of it by deceiving mans eyes.

Love is more than being attracted to one’s looks, but lust is being attracted to one’s looks alone (“The Differences…”). When Romeo only raises the subject of Juliet’s beauty and never speaks of her beyond her appearance, he clearly shows he has lustful infatuation towards Juliet and not true love. Additionally, Romeo rushes into claiming his “love” for Juliet whom he’s known for only a few hours, when he was just in love with Rosaline a couple hours before. As a matter of fact, when Romeo is underneath Juliet’s balcony, other than speaking of her beauty, he speaks of taking her virginity in metaphors and similes, wishing that Juliet would castaway Diana’s virginal clothing. In today’s culture to judge who is the most attractive in a room and give them the attention is a sign of lust, not love.…

Upon seeing Juliet, one of Romeo’s first lines is that he “ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (I, v, 54), and Juliet obviously feels the same as she is immediately entranced by him. Beauty starts their strong love, and continues to power it, for they hardly even know what the other is like when they decide to get married. If one or neither of them had been so captivated by the other’s beauty, then they wouldn’t have had such a strong initial attraction, and at the end of the play, might not have been willing to kill themselves rather than live without the…

Despite the fact that there are many instances in which the feelings of Romeo and Juliet seem to be lust, for example in the balcony scene where romeo was quick to jump out and talk to juliet when she offered him 'all of her', romeo and juliet are attracted to each other due to true love because Juliet gives Romeo the benefit of the doubt when he gets banished for killing tybalt, Juliet refuses to marry Paris, though she knows she will be disowned, and both characters commit suicide when they learn about the other's apparent death.…

It is to be believed that the story of Romeo and Juliet is more a story of lust rather than love. Romeo and Juliet is a story of two youthful teenagers helplessly falling in love, but their love story being destined by fate to end in a tragedy due to the quarrel between their families. There is no reason to indicate that their love is genuine. Their lust is mistaken as love due to Romeo and Juliet’s young age and little experience with personal relationships, believing that their love is true because they want to rebel against their strict parents feud and that the two lovers had only known each other a couple of days before getting married.…

Love is defined as “an intense feeling of deep affection”, Romeo and Juliet thought that they felt this between each other. When in fact they felt lust for each other and they weren’t able to see that. You can clearly see that throughout the story/play. For example when Romeo and Juliet are about to get married the Friar has to struggle to get them to stop showing any type of affection. Even when he got them to separate you could still acknowledge that they want to continue showing affection.…

Reading the definitions of love and infatuation, I concluded that the feelings that Romeo and Juliet felt toward each other were purely infatuation. Romeo and Juliet is a story about “love” and what two people are willing to sacrifice for it. Shakespeare says the play was about love but after reading the definitions of each, infatuation is way closer to what Romeo and Juliet actually feel towards each other. The definition of infatuation is an intense but short-lived passion or admiration for someone or something. Love proves to be different with its definition being, knowledge of each other, not of the flesh but through the flesh, knowledge of self, the real him, the real her, the mask slipped from the face.…

In Conclusion, I think that Romeo is a young, inexperienced and impatient but loyal and brave boy. I think that his naivety plays a huge rule in this because love was taken as an extravagant feeling to have when it was not truly happy as the lovers can experience heartbreak and many other obstacles. It seems as if Romeo only more cautious and deliberate, his devastating ending could have been prevented (even though we have not finished the book yet). Amongst friends especially Mercutio, Romeo shows signs of his social and quick witted persona, even with his fond of verbal jousting that is mainly about sex. Lastly, Romeo is like every other male in the world who only unveils their true self to the people who they trust or who understand them.…

The language that Romeo uses to describe the nature of his feelings for Juliet at first sight indicates to the audience that Romeo was very passionate about Juliet, “flattering sweet”. Juliet also feels very obsessed about Romeo and so she quickly asks Romeo to marry her if they love each other so much, “thy bent of love honourable, thy purpose marriage send me word tomorrow”. The feelings that is represented by both ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is very strong and so makes the audience feel adrenaline as they do not know the fate of the two star-crossed lovers also because in the real world perfect love does not exist and so it makes the audience more interested because they can relate to it . Shakespeare shows this type of love in a very interesting and confusing way as the characters were from the opposite side and so it made this type of love very unique and…
