Sting once said, “Without the voice of reason, every faith is its own curse.” Having a voice of reason is a very valuable quality to possess. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo does not have a voice of reason. He needs this because rather than thinking realistically, he thinks with his heart making his decisions impractical. Thus, Mercutio’s role as Romeo’s voice of reason is crucial. When Tybalt killed Mercutio, Romeo lost his one source of a voice of reason which resulted in him making immature and senseless actions. Hence, Tybalt is the reason for both Romeo and Juliet taking their lives because they could not be with each other. Even though Tybalt has a grudge against all of the Montagues, he seems to have an excessive grudge with Romeo.
