Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. The main theme for this story would be tragedy. This essay will include the 3 claims and examples that show why the theme of this play is a tragedy. Romeo and Juliet has a lot of death, anger, and fighting which makes the theme of this story a tragedy. One example of a tragedy in the story is when Mercutio and Tybalt die. Mercutio is killed by Tybalt and in revenge Romeo kills Tybalt. This is a tragedy because when someone dies it is already considered a tragedy. Juliet and Romeo both lose loved ones which is also a tragedy. As Romeo says, “This day’s black fate on moe days doth depend; This but begins the woe others must end.” (3.1.117-118) Another example is when Juliet is forced to marry Paris or else her father will disown her. The Capulet’s will build a golden statue of Romeo and the Montague’s a golden statue of Juliet. Lady Montague dies from grief when Romeo is exiled. Paris is killed by Romeo, Romeo kills himself and so does Juliet. The Montagues and Capulets both lose a lot of loved ones therefore this is considered a tragedy. Losing loved ones is very tragic, sad, depressing, and more. As the Prince says, “A glooming peace this morning with it brings. The sun for sorrow will not show his head. Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things.” (5.3.305-307) The three 3 claims that have been listed above explain and show us why Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. As already stated, all the fighting is what starts and causes all the sadness and anger in this story. It is also what makes this play’s theme, tragedy. There are a lot more examples in Romeo and Juliet that can explain why this would be a tragedy. Also, many other themes can fit this story.
