The nurse’s role in Romeo and Juliet is to act as a “romantic go between” for the couple. As this role, she delivers messages to the two about their marriage plans and other events that come up. Though her purpose as comic relief in the play can get in her way of fulfilling her role, an example being where Juliet is trying to hear the plans of her wedding and she keeps disregarding it saying that she is weary and old. The nurse does not share Juliet’s idea of love, from her understanding, love should be a temporary and physical encounter. She cannot relate to the spiritual bond that Romeo and Juliet have, but even though she does not understand, she still helps Juliet because of her maternal instinct.
