Who is to Blame for the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet? An enemy is defined as, “One that is antagonistic to another; especially : one seeking to injure, overthrow, or confound an opponent” (Merriam Webster). For as far back as anyone can remember, the two main families- the Capulets and the Montagues- in the play Romeo and Juliet have been greatest enemies. In a rivalry that has brought hatred, violence, and even death, these families continue the feud for many, many years. One might ask, what would have started a rivalry this big? The answer: nobody knows, but what people do know is that it is no good for anyone, especially poor Romeo and Juliet, who fell deeply in love at first sight to find out that they were supposed to be enemies; therefore, their love is forbidden. Fate allowed for Romeo and Juliet to fall in love before knowing that they were enemies. Fate allowed them to feel love for eachother, when what they should have been feeling was hate. This is very true, although they wouldn’t have to be enemies if it weren’t for their families rivalry.
