The Play That Ended with Six Characters Dying.
Everyone knows Romeo and Juliet, or at least knows how it ends, Romeo and Juliet die. But not only do Romeo and Juliet die, 4 other characters, Mercutio, Tybalt, Lady Montague, and Paris, also die. Romeo and Juliet died of suicide, Mercutio, Tybalt, and Paris are killed in fights. Lady Montague died of grief. Shakespeare treated each downfall differently, two of these six losses of life were more prevalent than others. Juliet and Romeo’s death was a result of personal and familial issues. Juliet killed herself with the dagger because of Romeo’s death. Romeo only died because of Juliet’s family, the Capulets, and their wishes for Juliet to marry the county Paris, and as a cause of the Capulet’s

Mercutio is stabbed under Romeo’s arm by Tybalt. This deadly scuffle was started because of the pure detestation between the Montagues and the Capulets. Not only does Mercutio die, Tybalt is also murdered by Romeo in his rage over Mercutio’s untimely death. Tybalt was definitely an antagonist in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and such when he was murdered the majority readers were probably jubilant that he was dead, but of course his death was the start of a line of deaths, because of his death Romeo is banished from Verona ergo Juliet must fake her death to prevent her arranged marriage to the county Paris, and because of her ‘death’ Romeo believes she is dead and visits her ‘grave’ and fights with Paris and kills him and then kills himself and then Juliet kills herself because of Romeo’s suicide and then Lady Montague, Romeo’s mother, dies of heartbreak over her banished son. Lady Montague’s death was definitely because of familial and personal issues, after Romeo is banished, she is so incredibly upset that she basically grieves herself to death. Her death was also surprising and incredibly sudden as Romeo was banished one day and then she died the very next …show more content…
Romeo’s death was suicide and more familial and personal, while Mercutio was killed by Tybalt and his death was more moral. Their last words are also incredibly different, Romeo’s was more about his love for Juliet and his own death, Mercutio’s last words were basically cursing the Capulet and Montague name, “A plague a’ both your houses! They have made worms’ meat of me.” (Shakespeare) Mercutio and Tybalt are two incredibly different characters, Tybalt is more of a villain and Mercutio is much more of a comic relief. Mercutio is also slain by Tybalt in a street sword fight. Their deaths are very similar though. Both of their deaths are moral and familial issues, seeing as Mercutio is a Montague and Tybalt is a Capulet. They also both die by sword, Mercutio by Tybalt’s sword and Tybalt by Romeo’s sword. A difference is that Tybalt’s death was more of payback while Mercutio’s death was because of the hatred between the Montagues and the

Most of the characters in this play die as a result of Romeo and Juliet’s love. From Paris to Mercutio, to Romeo and Juliet themselves, they all die as a result of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. None of these deaths would have happened if Romeo and Juliet had not been so “in love”. Most of these deaths were accidents and/or not “directly” related to their relationship, but if you tear back the layers, you can clearly see that these deaths were caused by Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. Take Mercutio’s death for example.…

Mercutio is one of the reasons that Romeo and Juliet ever meet in the first place. On their way to the party Mercutio urges Romeo to go to the party when he begins to have doubts and misgivings in regards to attending. Also, Mercutio's death caused Tybalt's; his death is the reason that Romeo decides to fight Tybalt and kill him which causes a domino effect of events. Though Tybalt may not effect the play as much as Mercutio he does affect it in some ways. One way that Tybalt affects the play is by continuing to persuade Romeo to fight even after he says he does not want to.…

Hatred Is Our Greatest Downfall “Hate, when allowed to exist and prosper, can destroy even the greatest love.” It is hatred that destroys the love of Romeo and Juliet. This quote is exemplified throughout the entire play, relating to the Montagues and Capulets and their hate for each other. In the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, the two families show their hate for each other when Montague and Capulet want to fight drawing their swords.…

There many things that can be said about the concept of true friendship and brotherhood. Quotes such as “never make a companion equal to a brother” and “true love is rare, but friendship is rarer”, depict the idea that these two concepts are infrequent and scarce. The main characters in Shakespeare’s renowned play, Romeo and Juliet, are seen to abide by these two concepts, having laid down their lives for each other, resulting in death and tragedy. Considering the language used by Shakespeare, I will explore the impact act 1 scene 4 has on the relationship between Romeo and Mercutio.…

The Verona Murder List In Verona in the setting of Romeo and Juliet, there are many accounts of direct and indirect murder between the two families of Montague and Capulet. Although there are multiple culprits to the numerous deaths, two culprits I have concluded are reasonable for murder are Mercutio and Benvolio. The two boys are most villainous in acts two and three in which they proceed to go to Capulet ball; that’s where the whole problem begins. The people of Verona have the right to know that their fellow neighbors and friends are also murders, such as Benvolio and Mercutio.…

The Butterfly Effect… What is the Butterfly Effect? The butterfly effect is “the idea, used in chaos theory, that a very small difference in the initial state of a physical system can make a significant difference to the state at some later time”, that would be the definition according to Dictionary.com. This means that everything that Tybalt did affected the way he is killed and why he died the way he did. Tybalt’s death should put blame on Tybalt himself for the following reasons, Tybalt kills Mercutio with little to no regret or contrition , also Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel twice, and another rationale would be Tybalt’s fragile masculinity and him also thinking and acting as if is superior than everyone around him at all times. Among those points there are more things that had a role in his death, one being when Romeo tries to talk to him and tell him that he didn’t wish to hurt him now that they are family and that he loved him like that but, Tybalt didn’t want to listen.…
