91% of US high schools teach Shakespeare and 84% of those high school teach Romeo and Juliet. As stated by John Green, “A tragedy occurs when a mostly good character or characters of Nobel extractions, here Romeo and Juliet, make an error, getting married so quickly, ignoring the family feud, and are brought love, a double suicide.” Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona where two families, the Capulets and Montagues have an ongoing feud. Instead of being against each other, Romeo and Juliet fall in love. Their love ends tragically with their deaths which ends the feud. The tragedy of Romeo and Juliet can be blamed on Friar Lawrence. He married Romeo and Juliet only to try to end the feud. In Act II Friar Lawrence marries Romeo and Juliet to end the feud, “For this alliance may so happy to prove to turn your households rancor to pure love,” (II.ii 98-99). This shows that Friar Lawrence only wanted to marry Romeo and Juliet just to end the feud. He believe that the true love of Romeo and Juliet could end the feud and the fighting between the Capulets and the Montagues.
