In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses a lot of puns to entertain the audience with laughter.
MERCUTIO. And so did I.
ROMEO. Well, what was yours?
MERCUTIO. That dreamers often lie (Romeo and Juliet 1.4.54-56).
When Mercutio and Romeo are at the Capulet’s party, Mercutio uses many puns to more funny. He uses the word lie as pun meaning untruth when he actually means to lie down as one would do when sleeping. This shows how Shakespeare created Mercutio to be funny so he can amuse the audience.
But, Romeo and Juliet don’t have one single setting. In each scene, the setting changes to different places. It takes place outside the streets of Verona, inside and outside of the Capulet household, Friar Laurence’s cell, a street in Mantua, and a churchyard of the Capulet’s. Many scene changes distance the audience from the characters of the play. However, the play doesn’t have a ten-year gap weere the audience is distanced from the play. It occurs in the time span between four days. The audience has a chance to understand the characters more because it goes in chronological order and has no flashbacks to leave the audience waiting to know the resolution of the
