Nearly half of adults from the ages eighteen to twenty-four currently live with their parents, and the vast majority say they are living back at home for reasons other than economic conditions (Firestone). The likely cause of this is overparenting. A person that had parents constantly lingering by them throughout their childhood to satisfy each and every of their little needs will become familiarized to not needing to do their work for themselves, and being unable to grow out of that habit, will end up incapable of living their life independently in the future. Many parents will do little acts such as giving their children snacks before they are hungry, brushing their child’s teeth for them, or pushing them around in a stroller while they are …show more content…
In Romeo & Juliet, two star-crossed lovers choose to run away from home to be with each other rather than have one go along with a marriage her parents were forcing her into, and both lovers end up dying because of it (Shakespeare). Juliet’s parents push her into a marriage that she does not want with only one day’s notice, thinking that it will be beneficial towards her and her family’s prestigious name, without even asking her opinion, for she had actually just married Romeo in secret. This lack of communication between child and parents causes Juliet and Romeo’s rash actions because the relationship between Juliet and her parents is so one-sided. Her parents are the only ones making the decision to get married and that angers Juliet, so she decides to take matters into her own hands and flees with Romeo. Likewise, when a parent sets many restrictions on their child, those children “have likely not developed a sense of responsibility for their actions” (Hewitt). As the children will not be introduced to virtually any real life situations or harmful things that could happen to them, they will be more prone to try different activities out, but not actually understanding the severity of the circumstances, could receive horrible consequences. This could also lead them to be more easily influenced by others, putting them at risk for people to take advantage of them, which could lead to many other negative situations such as taking drugs or alcohol. Romeo and Juliet also do not think about the repercussions of their actions, and eventually both kill themselves due to the bad, but misinterpreted, circumstances. When parents try to shield their child from all the bad concepts in the world, it ends up making the child more naive and unable to truly
