Romeo And Juliet Portfolio

Decent Essays
The assignment that is included in this portfolio is the Romeo and Juliet essay that I wrote in my freshman year of high school. The original assignment was to write about an important event in the play. The important event that I chose to write about, was the death of the character Tybalt, and the three main causes that contributed to it. I chose to include this piece in my portfolio because it was not one of my best pieces of writing, and I wanted to show a distinct difference in my writing over the past year. This piece of writing is very telling of my 9th grade year. My 9th grade year was somewhat challenging, and this piece of writing shows that. My weak control over syntax and diction are apparent, and the essay is overall very generic.

“What is meant to be will always be.” This is a widely spread quote that explains the power of fate. Many people choose to believe that that’s what guides them in life and along their journey in love. Portfolio Assignment Throughout the Rhetorical Analysis paper that I completed for this English 101 class, I called back to many of my past experiences in high school that allowed me to interpret the meaning of the song that I decided to choose. The main skills from my past that I referenced were: my ability to comprehend text, my ability to convey a message through an essay, and my ability to view a text with an open mind. Opening my mind to the text was one of the more challenging abilities that I used. Using this ability allowed me to grasp the meaning of this particularly challenging text and, due to how easily I completed the required length of the paper, I believe that I was fairly successful in my endeavor.…

The three sample pieces I chose to include in my portfolio are an argumentative English essay, a book report written for an AP science class, and a lab report. These pieces illustrate my proficiency in multiple subject areas including research and argumentation. The first piece presented in my portfolio is an argumentative essay written for my AP Language and Composition course. The given essay, written by Edward O. Wilson, and AP prompt were taken from the 2009 AP Language exam, found on the College Board website. The prompt instructed students to “write an essay in which you analyze how Wilson’s use of satire illustrates the unproductive nature of such discussions.”…

I’ve experienced many hardships when dealing with writing assignments, but the worst would have to be my Senior Portfolio. After starting the assignment, I learned very quickly that the assignment was going to be the easy compared to gathering all the information needed about myself. I was required to create multiple different essays that consisted of my post-high school plan and a reflective essay. It seemed easy to write essays on myself, but until I was required to write it all down, I never realized how many experiences contribute into making me who I am today. Even though I find it as the most challenging writing assignment, I also see it as the best learning experience to show who I am and how I plan my future.…

When I began this class, it had been over ten years since I had taken English 111, so I was a little apprehensive about whether I would be able to remember everything from that long ago and be successful in this class. The first paper that I was tasked to write was a literary analysis of “Little Things” by Raymond Carver. I was excited about this assignment in the beginning because, as an avid reader, I really enjoy critically looking at what I think the author is trying to say to me through their story. I love analyzing my favorite books and do it quite often, much to my husband’s dismay, I’m sure, because he’s probably tired of listening to me talk about books endlessly by now. However, I soon found that one of my problems with writing is that I seem to have a hard time expressing exactly what I want to say.…

~MY REFLECTION~ For this project, my audience was the readers of the Five Cent Cigar, so basically I was writing to the students and staff here at URI. When beginning this project, I thought very carefully about who to interview because I wanted to pick someone who would be interesting and meaningful for the readers to learn about. I chose to interview Luis Gonzalez since he is a member of the Student Senate, which I think is an organization not a lot of people here on campus know about, but I think it is important they do know about. This goes along with learning outcome 2c, since I was able to understand my audience and explain why I wrote the way I did for the context and appropriate rhetorical situation.…
