Romeo and Juliet: Play vs. Movie
Immediately I notice that there are two colors that stand out, one being red and the other blue. The red signifies the Montague family and the blue the Capulets. The colors help show who is in each family. The reason Baz Luhrmann picked red and blue instead of any other color is because the colors are opposites as are the families. The colors also weren't extreme. For example, you don’t see Mercutio wearing blue pants and blue shorts. A way Baz Luhrmann shows it is by the color of Mercutio’s car.

The mood of the movie was very different then the play. The play was very sad and then really happy. There was no in between. On the other hand it was kinda happy throughout the whole movie and very fast. In the

Two feuding families; two young lovers; one story of forbidden love. Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story which encompasses an essence that defines the story no matter the context. Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet embraces the physical violence, rivalry, death of lovers and reconciliation, thus constructing a movie with the same emotional response intended by the original play. Zeffirelli’s interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet greatly reflects the major changes during the era. The 1960’s was a time of civil unrest, youth rebellion of moral and civil rights and a period in history where authority was questioned.…

In the 1999 movie, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” directed by Michael Hoffman, a girl meets a boy, loses him due to love pollen, and wins him back with the help of fairy magic. Although the plot seems simple, it has multiple elements that it takes from the play and amplifies it so it can sit on the big screen. Therefore, the movie is a good adaptation because it portrays the characters well, conveys the costumes accurately, and makes the play understandable. First of all, “Dream” portrays the characters very well. In the play, Helena is portrayed as an obsessive, ostentatious, and shameless individual.…

Written in 1594, the historically significant play by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, has been adapted numerously throughout the years, including a traditional film version directed by Franco Zeffirelli in 1968 and a modern edition by Baz Luhrmann in 1996. As in the play, the meeting between Juliet and Romeo instigates the tragedy, with both directors utilising mise-en-scene and sound differently in this scene. Zeffirelli, however, provides an enhanced portrayal of the original piece with a traditional feel and more effective use of techniques. Zeffirelli applies mise-en-scene in the meeting of the two protagonists to foreshadow upcoming events. Juliet wears a red dress to symbolise blood therefore generating sympathy from the audience by foreshadowing the inevitable tragedy.…

The time period of the movie vs. the play was different. Because in the movie there was guns, police cars, helicopters, and radios in the car and televisions. But in the play there were horses, no radios in the car you had to sit in silence, and swords. The time period is not the same because the play made it sound like life was boring. But in the movie it made it sound like that life was not so boring in the time of age.…

For example, during the Queen Mab scene, everything slows down and we witness Mercurio’s outspoken personality and theatrical hand movements. This slowing down, this change of pace, grabs the audience’s attention and signifies that this scene is important. In Baz Luhrmann’s version, what the characters say is not as important. The meaning of what they say is expressed through the way the character acts, which is easier for a modern audience to understand but does not present the story the way that is described in Shakespeare’s…
