In the beginning of the play, the prologue is said by a news anchor, rather than a chorus. This immediately shows that the time period of the movie is completely different than that of the play. The movie is set in Verona Beach, a modern metropolis. The opening scene takes place at a gas station instead of just in the streets. If that wasn’t strange enough, the characters use guns called “Sword” and “Dagger” rather than the real things. More key components of Middle Age life are modernized also. Horses have become luxurious cars, cigarettes are found in almost every scene, and there is even drug use. There are minor changes that are frequently found, like the characters playing pool, swimming in pools, and car pooling. The letter that Friar …show more content…

In the 1999 movie, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” directed by Michael Hoffman, a girl meets a boy, loses him due to love pollen, and wins him back with the help of fairy magic. Although the plot seems simple, it has multiple elements that it takes from the play and amplifies it so it can sit on the big screen. Therefore, the movie is a good adaptation because it portrays the characters well, conveys the costumes accurately, and makes the play understandable. The costume has been designed well to illuminate an important element of the character. The guns have replaced the word “daggers” or “swords”, and expensive cars have been used in the screenplay. Musically, audiences are provided with modern hip-hop, electric guitars sound effects and chorus chanting a direct translation of play’s prologue. Few plot details have been shifted, most notable towards the end. Many stories reflect a work of Shakespeare’s in some way or another. One story that I remember comparing to Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, was “The Outsiders”. Both center around two groups that despise each other, in “Romeo and Juliet” it was the Montagues and the Capulets, and in “The Outsiders” those groups are the Socs and the Greasers. One theme in Shakespeare’s play is that hatred and fighting will bring tragedies. This is evident when Johnny dies in the book.…
