Romeo and Juliet Movie comparison by Austin Wylde
Character
While I watched this movie, there were many different people that are not who they were in the play. Mercutio in this movie was not who I thought he was. Mercutio was a crazy party animal who lost his top! Benvolio on the other hand almost never drew his sword in the play. He did multiple times in the movie as he said he was keeping the peace. Another person who surprised me was the Friar. Friar was an old, wise man in the play ,but in the movie he is a church priest, which makes sense but it never mentioned him being a priest in the play. Romeo probably surprised me the most. He doesn't like the fighting and his look seemed different compared to the play.

Mercutio is an interesting character. But, a major reason why Mercutio takes part of the blame for the tragedy is his tendency to take risks, or more specifically, the fact that Mercutio decided to partake in a feast held by the Montagues greatest enemy. Although many could argue that this was Benvolio’s idea, it must not be forgotten that Benvolio is the only character in the book that can reason maturely, therefore Benvolio would have eventually changed his mind once he realizes the consequences or risks. But, then there is Mercutio, he openly goes to disregard Romeo’s…

Film Adaptations: Romeo and Juliet (1968) and West Side Story (1961) Many films have been created based on novels and play scripts. Plays have transitioned from performances on stage to the big cinema screens. Since many legendary play scripts were created before our century, American film directors had to ask themselves, “How can an older piece of work interest the audience of today?”. Directors found it challenging to express an original piece of work while attempting to interest the minds of today. The characters in many older works lived in a different time and in a different country.…

When watching both Gnome and Juliet and Romeo and Juliet we can see that there is many differences when it comes to certain scenes. One of the major things is the ending, even though the both die in the regular Romeo and Juliet I still prefer that than the one in Gnomeo and Juliet. The three main things that I saw that were different among the two was; the way the movies end, how the two families learn their lesson, and finally how the two families fought throughout the movie. When watching both of the movies we can see that when it came to fighting it was very different among the two. For example, in the regular Romeo and Juliet, the two families fight with swords which ends in two characters dying.…

Romeo’s True Character Foils in literature are characters that contrast another character, in most cases the protagonist, in order to highlight specific qualities of the other character. Additionally, they can be used to show the readers how things could have been different if the protagonist continued on another path. In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare utilizes many foils for protagonist Romeo Montague, such as Paris, Mercutio, and Tybalt. Throughout the play, these characters accentuate and reveal Romeo’s true character and shows the audience how things could have gone differently for him, if only he made different choices.…

Many of the characters act the same in the play and the movie giving a good representation of the play. Someone who watches the movie and does not read the play might get that Romeo is very moody and irrational, which is also shown throughout the play because of Romeo’s rash decisions. The play includes a large fight between Mercutio and Tybalt before both of them die, Mercutio first by Tybalt and then Tybalt by Romeo. In the play, Romeo fights Tybalt after Tybalt kills Mercutio just like in the movie, the Prince can be quoted speaking to the town’s people, “Where are the vile beginners of this fray?” (III.i.135).…

In the original play, Mercutio is seen as a normal, intelligent man who is friends with Romeo and a Mercenary for his family. Whereas in the Baz Luhrmann's 'modern' interpretation, he is viewed as a crazy, unintelligent crossdresser that seems to have lost his mind. The Queen Mab scene has been ruined by the modern interpretation of Mercutio as he no longer tells a 'highly imaginative' Queen Mab speech, but instead acts like a fool and sets a mood that greatly contradicts Shakespeare's amazing poetry. This 'modernisation' creates a less relative, incomprehensible Mercutio and Queen Mab scene.…
