For many people, they will go to any lengths for the people they love. However, a person’s sense of judgement begins to warp when they can only focus on one thing or one person. The ability to make good decisions is lost, and things like pressure and guilt can coerce a person into doing almost anything. Poorly made decisions can lead to irreversible negative consequences, but many people aren’t able to anticipate those kinds of results because they’re too caught up with the issues they have to confront in the present. In Romeo and Juliet, multiple characters acted without too much thought which in turn eventually lead to a plethora of bad events happening one after the other. Also, being able to distinguish between the wrong and right thing may not always be easy. And even if a person knows what’s right and what’s wrong, it may still be hard to do the right thing. For example, Romeo and demanding that the apothecary give him a poison that would kill him. Finally, after being pressed about it multiple times and being convinced with Romeo’s money, the apothecary states that “My poverty, but not my will, consents.” (Act 5 Scene 1) Because of how bad of a situation the apothecary was in, he made the decision to give Romeo the poison even though both of them knew that what they were doing is wrong. Another example of how impulsiveness can affect a person’s decisions is on page 81, when Romeo uses a metaphor and says that “O mischief, thou art swift To enter in the thoughts of desperate men!” (Act 5 Scene 1) In this instance, Romeo is explaining how his mind is immediately conjuring bad ideas and running wild after he hears the news of Juliet’s death. By saying this, Shakespeare shows how grief and fear will almost immediately creep into a person’s mind after they experience something distressful or jarring, which will distort their judgement.
