Romeo and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare, is a famous tragedy that tells the story of young lovers. The play's plot and themes are evidence of how time can change many things, but not love. Three specific themes found in the play can be applied to today's individuals and relationships. A theme that is well represented in Romeo and Juliet is the theme of love conquers all. In the play it is evident that Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight and from that point forward in the story they only want to protect their love. When Romeo first sees Juliet at the Capulet party his world basically stops and all he wants is to kiss her. The quote “Why railest thou on thy birth, the heaven, and earth,”(III, iii, 129), said by Friar Lawrence about Romeo wanting to take his own life is an extended metaphor to try and explain his life is valuable. Romeo is saying he would rather die than be apart from Juliet, which in any other term would be insane but his passion for Juliet is more than enough reason behind living and suffering, but still being alive. This recurring theme appears again near the end of the play. “A dream of poison, such soon-speeding gear/ As will disperse itself through all the veins,/ That the life-weary taker may fall dead,”(V, i, 64-69), Romeo is speaking to the apothecary because he is prepared to die after hearing about Juliet’s death. The story of a married couple in Italy, where the wife fell into a coma and her husband stayed loyal until he could not take her being without her anymore, he killed himself just hours before she awoke from BBC news, it is a similar story to Romeo and Juliet’s. This connection of two stories being extremely similar shows how passion overtakes reason in many different generations.
