In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare shows several examples of different types of love between characters. Throughout the story, there is proof of unrequited love, romantic love, the love of family loyalty, parental love, and friendship. Each form of love having it’s own traits that are similar and different from another’s.
One of the main types of love most expressed in Romeo and Juliet is romantic love. This is expressed between Romeo and Juliet themselves, as the chorus says “now Romeo is beloved and loves again” (2.Prologue.5). The chorus explains that Romeo is now in love again and is loved as well. This is shown again when Romeo and Juliet are talking during the balcony scene. ROMEO. On the other hand, while Juliet is asked by her mother if she would marry Paris, she responds that she can try to love him, but only if her mother advises it. LADY CAPULET. Speak briefly. Can you like of Paris, love?
JULIET. I’ll look to like if looking liking move. But no more deep will I endart mine eye Than your consent gives strength to make it fly. (1.3.98-100)
This shows that even though Paris is in love with Juliet, the feeling is not returned. As the story goes on, Juliet continues to deny Paris, proving the existence of unrequited love in Romeo and Juliet. In the end, each type of love is similar in several ways. The love of friendship is similar to the love of family honor, as both have a sense of pride and care. Another fair comparison is with unrequited love and romantic love. One similarity is both types of love can hurt at times. One example of this is when Romeo and Juliet have recently met and are learning of the other’s family and name. NURSE His name is Romeo, and a Montague, The only son of your great enemy. JULIET (aside) My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too

In “Romeo and Juliet” there are 2 examples of this; one example of unrequited love in “Romeo and Juliet” is with Romeo for Rosaline. The other example is with Paris for Juliet. Unrequited love in the play is told from one to another “Don't waste your love on somebody, who doesn't value it” this being directed towards Romeo talking about Rosaline. Although Paris loves Juliet, she does not have the same feelings towards Paris because of her feelings for Romeo. Another example of this is when Mercutio dies by the hands of Tybalt, Romeo’s cousin, Romeo loves Tybalt unconditionally, but it is unrequited love because Tybalt does not love romeo…
