One of the main types of love most expressed in Romeo and Juliet is romantic love. This is expressed between Romeo and Juliet themselves, as the chorus says “now Romeo is beloved and loves again” (2.Prologue.5). On the other hand, while Juliet is asked by her mother if she would marry Paris, she responds that she can try to love him, but only if her mother advises it. LADY CAPULET. Speak briefly. Can you like of Paris, love?
JULIET. I’ll look to like if looking liking move. But no more deep will I endart mine eye Than your consent gives strength to make it fly. (1.3.98-100)
This shows that even though Paris is in love with Juliet, the feeling is not returned. As the story goes on, Juliet continues to deny Paris, proving the existence of unrequited love in Romeo and Juliet. In the end, each type of love is similar in several ways. The love of friendship is similar to the love of family honor, as both have a sense of pride and care. Another fair comparison is with unrequited love and romantic love. One similarity is both types of love can hurt at times. One example of this is when Romeo and Juliet have recently met and are learning of the other’s family and name. NURSE His name is Romeo, and a Montague, The only son of your great enemy. JULIET (aside) My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too
