Romeo and Juliet Literary Analysis Written in 1597 Romeo and Juliet is still one of the greatest plays ever written. What makes it so revolutionary? Many of the characters went against social, gender, and societal roles to follow their passions. The nurse and juliet both go against societal and gender norms multiple times in the book. Juliet goes against gender norms when she decides to marry romeo instead of Pars, and the nurse when she assists Juliet in secretly marrying romeo. “Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.” Juliet tells romeo this while she in on her balcony, this statement not only breaks social norms but also gender norms. It shows how Juliet doesn’t care about if the Montagues are her families sworn enemy because she is still in love with romeo. She is telling him that she will stop being a capulet if it means that she can be with him. She is also breaking gender norms by going against her father which was very frowned upon in the 1300’s. When the nurse found out about Romeo and Juliet at first she did not approve of it and told Juliet that she thought she was being childish and dumb, as Juliet was to marry Paris. The nurse keeps Romeo and Juliet's relationship a secret from Juliet's parents who are also her bosses even though it could get her fired or in a lot of trouble. The nurse also acts as a messenger between the two lovers and helped them arrange their secret wedding. All of those actions were breaking societal norms as any other nurse would have told their employers about the relationship
