“Many critics of Shakespearian drama feel that the friar serves as an agent of malevolent fate” (Holland). Instead of using Friar Laurence to personify all that was wrong with the Catholic Church, he portrayed him as a religious man who was truly concerned for the young couple. He is presented as a wise, understanding man who officiates over both the sacred and secular rites of the play. He oversees the marriage of Romeo and Juliet, which he hopes will then bring about peace between their warring families. There is absolutely nothing self serving at work here because Friar Lawrence has no wish for recognition or advancement.…

Authors use motifs to deliver the theme to the authors more effectively. In this story Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare used haste, time, and light and dark imagery as a motif to prove the theme of individual versus society. First, Shakespeare used haste as a motif to prove the theme of individual versus society. For example, Romeo and Juliet both committed suicide because Romeo didn’t got the message from friar Balthasar because of his hasty departure (Shakespeare, 5.1). This shows that after they realized that they had to overcome so many obstacles in order to stay together in Earth, one of the fasted way to stay with their lovers forever was committing suicide; on Earth they had to overcome their family and their expectations before they…

Imagine being a man who was seen as someone as holy and influential as the church, and then turning your back on your beliefs to help two young lovers betray their families. This is the trial and tribulation that Friar Laurence went through after realizing his plan of getting the young Montague and Capulet together resulted in their deaths. Although Friar thought he was being helpful and caring, he was ultimately the man responsible for the deaths of Sir Romeo Montague and Lady Juliet Capulet. My first piece of evidence to prove Friar Laurence guilty is a diary entry he wrote a couple days after the deaths of Romeo and Juliet.…

If Lord Capulet did not place this momentous burden on Juliet, then she may have not tried to fake her death that ultimately ended in her as well as Romeo’s demise. Even though Lord Capulet could be responsible for the death of the lovers, Friar Laurence is predominantly the one to blame due to his lack of judgment throughout the play. Despite Friar Laurence’s good intentions when agreeing to marry Romeo and Juliet, thinking that it would end the feud, he neglected to foresee the potential negative outcomes. Upon his agreement to marry Romeo and Juliet, he hastily advises, “Come, come with me, and we will make short work; For, by your leaves, you shall not stay alone Till holy church incorporate two in one”(II.vi.35-37). Friar Laurence already knew that tensions were high between the Montagues and Capulets, and by doing this he endangered the well-being of both Romeo and Juliet if anyone ever found out.…
