Up until the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, his support of their desire to be together was necessary to their relationship working. Despite the young lovers being a part of rival families, he attempted to break the traditional feud by bringing them together in hopes of peace. In the beginning of the play, Romeo and Juliet meet at a party hosted by Juliet’s family. They fall in love at first sight, as if the stars had aligned. After the party, Romeo talked with the Friar about how he loved Juliet so much that he wanted immediate marriage. His response to Romeo’s request for marriage was, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be; for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your household’s rancor to pure love.” (2.3.90-92) The Montague and Capulet feud has been going on for generations and generations. Friar Laurence was associated with the church, therefore held a more neutral standpoint in this fight. But, he is a close confidant of Romeo. So, when Romeo asks for the Friar’s opinion of his love for Juliet, he says that it is a good idea to love her in hopes that it will bring the two families together.
