The play starts out with the Chorus introducing the play. The chorus states that Romeo and Juliet are “star-crossed” lovers. This shows that fate is really what controls the outcome of the play. When Romeo believes that Juliet is dead and cries “Then I defy you, stars” shows that Romeo and Juliet’s love is in opposition with destiny. The event of Romeo’s death and Juliet’s awakening is also the doing of fate. As soon as Romeo dies, Juliet wakes up to see her husband dead. Friar John, who Friar Laurence sent to deliver the letter became quarantined because of the black plague. People were afraid he had come in contact with the plague so they locked him up. Illness is not something we as humans can control. Another type of conflict is Man vs. society. Romeo and Juliet face misfortune from their families about their love. Their society is telling them that they should hate each other, but their hearts tell them that they are in love. The final type of conflict is man vs. himself. For example, Juliet internally fights with herself about her love for Romeo because they are enemies. This happens during the famous balcony scene.
